Fantastic spooky Gothic Christmas tales
Revisado: 12-31-23
Great spooky Gothic Christmas vibes. The stories went together well. Enjoyed reading some of my favorite authors and looking forward to checking out more from the authors I haven't read before. Worth the purchase price, worth revisiting sometime.

Four strangers and six weeks: this is all that separates Mara from one life-changing payday. She was surprised when reality TV producers came knocking at Primal Instinct—the survival school where she teaches rich clients not to die during a night outdoors—and even more shocked to be cast in their new show, Civilization. Now she just has to live off the land with her fellow survivors for long enough to get the prize money.

"Slice of (survival) life" character exploration!
Revisado: 11-26-23
For a book that really wants to dig in on character and exploring a situation, I thought the pacing was great! I finished it in a day. This was clearly more literary than many readers wanted- questions ARE answered but never 100% definitively, the character journey and exploration of survival situations on people are more the point than why precisely things happened or the nitty gritty of resolution, etc- but the book also had a great sense of humor and never lectured its audience. I picked up the book bc I enjoyed Blair Braverman's guest episodes on You're Wrong About but I wasn't sure she would write such a good novel. I'm glad I gave it a chance and I hope she writes more!

Historia
Alma Katsu calls My Heart Is a Chainsaw “a homage to slasher films that also manages to defy and transcend genre.” On the surface is a story of murder in small-town America. But beneath is its beating heart: a biting critique of American colonialism, Indigenous displacement, and gentrification, and a heartbreaking portrait of a broken young girl who uses horror movies to cope with the horror of her own life.

Jade Daniels lives and breathes
Revisado: 03-05-23
I love this book. Slashers aren't my thing, but deep dives into character are, and Jade is an incredible protagonist- a really, real-feeling, messed-up, misfit teen. I love her though. And to be honest? I don't really trust the readers who can't get past their initial reaction to the things that they find off-putting about her, who can't have compassion or empathy for her, who care more that she comes off as weird to them than what she has been through. I trust those of you with an inner Sheriff Hardy or a Mr. Holmes (though they have their failures, they do care) or a Letha.
And Jade helps readers (and her history teacher) navigate the slasher genre anyway. So that when it gets to the third act body dump, we can hang in there even if that bit isn't our thing. It's so worth it.

Historia
High conflict is what happens when discord distills into a good-versus-evil kind of feud, the kind with an us and a them. In this state, the brain behaves differently. We feel increasingly certain of our own superiority, and everything we do to try to end the conflict, usually makes it worse. Eventually, we can start to mimic the behavior of our adversaries, harming what we hold most dear. In this book, New York Times bestselling author and award-winning journalist Amanda Ripley investigates how good people get captured by high conflict—and how they break free.

Six months ago she woke up in a stranger's body, and she's afraid she might have to give it back. The whole city is falling to pieces. Here for This
Revisado: 09-20-22
I'm completely here for the madness that are the Locked Tomb books. Moira Quirk is probably the single best audiobook narrator.ive ever encountered with the distinctiveness and recognizability of the characters she portrays across these three novels. Can't wait for book four, and suspect I will be forced to bump these bad boys up to 5-stars once I can see the whole picture, so to speak. Regardless, these will remain head-shaking, jaw-dropping favorites.

An incredible middle grade book
Revisado: 10-01-21
This book was fantastic! It was age-appropriate, fun, but dealt well with serious topics. I found it very enjoyable as an adult but would still recommend it for kids. I am impressed by what a skilled writer Aimee Lucido is and I will be checking out her other books. The narrator was also great! However, I think the accompanying pdf I received was for a different book. I am in the process of contacting Audible about this issue.

Historia
Colin Dickey is on the trail of America's ghosts. Crammed into old houses and hotels, abandoned prisons and empty hospitals, the spirits that linger continue to capture our collective imagination, but why? His own fascination piqued by a house hunt in Los Angeles that revealed derelict foreclosures and "zombie homes", Dickey embarks on a journey across the continental United States to decode and unpack the American history repressed in our most famous haunted places.

Great history and sociology of haunting
Revisado: 11-01-20
I really enjoyed this history/sociology of haunting in the U.S. Really good broad examination of the topic. Would have been more interesting if I wasn't already familiar from podcasts like Lore by Aaron Mahnke, but not Dickey's fault. I also appreciated that Dickey was willing to look at the way race and stories about race in the U.S. shape our haunting tales. The section on how increases in technology may shape our ghost stories was also interesting!
My gosh though, the guy reading this one annoyed the heck out of me! Could not stand how he pronounced white. Also annoyed by the way he switched between "dry historical reader" voice and doing, like, character voices when reading what sounded like primary source perspectives? A little more human during the regular parts, a little less actor during those parts, would have suited me better.

It is true that this is probably better to read than listen to if you can. But wow, this book is just so powerful and beautifully written. It is tough but I think there are little pockets of hope that do come through.
