Historia
In this exhilarating tale by New York Times bestselling and award-winning author Nnedi Okorafor, a disabled Nigerian American woman pens a wildly successful Sci-Fi novel, but as her fame rises, she loses control of the narrative—a surprisingly cutting, yet heartfelt drama about art and love, identity and connection, and, ultimately, what makes us human. This is a story unlike anything you’ve seen before.

Inventive, fascinating, breathtaking
Revisado: 04-09-25
I loved the intricate story. It was an original concept, well done. The physical details pulled me inside of the characters. The language and culture pulsed through both plots. Seeing a body through the eyes of a paraplegic and the robots opened me to a new perspective on what it means to be human and AI. I only would ask for less of the f-word. A fascinating vision.

Historia
Joe Pickett is the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming, a town where nearly everyone hunts and the game warden—especially one like Joe who won't take bribes or look the other way—is far from popular. When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. There had to be a reason that the outfitter, with whom he's had run-ins before, chose his backyard, his woodpile to die in.

Historia
Chava is a golem, a woman made of clay, who can hear the thoughts and longings of those around her and feels compelled by her nature to help them. Ahmad is a jinni, a restless creature of fire, once free to roam the desert but now imprisoned in the shape of a man. Fearing they’ll be exposed as monsters, these magical beings hide their true selves and try to pass as human - just two more immigrants in the bustling world of 1900s Manhattan. Brought together under calamitous circumstances, their lives are now entwined - but they’re not yet certain of what they mean to each other.

Humanity, Interconnections, and Understanding
Revisado: 06-08-24
The Golem and the Jinni continue their relationship and bring the complexities of feelings, miscommunication, and self-doubt most humans experience. The fact that the two principals are magical beings brings a new perspective to what people say and how they feel, often hiding the truth from themselves more than others. Hidden Palace is an intricate weaving of folk tales, Yiddish literature, and pure imagination. I found myself reflecting on my life and imagining what it was like for my parents, who were similar to the displaced immigrants in this novel. It is a beautiful and thought provoking story.

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

Women’s Words in Excile
Revisado: 05-02-24
The meticulous methods of cataloging words was fascinating and tedious. The descriptions of the hierarchy of editors and contributors rang true in its bias against women was in sharp contrast the value and knowledge gained from women.
The first third of the story kept me enthralled.
The second third was less emotionally resonant, save for the pivotal scene.
It was puzzling that the tone seemed to shift and detach from deeply felt emotions in the middle and never recaptured the energy of the earlier years.
It is a fascinating look at the history of the journey from fascicles to a complete Oxford Dictionary and the decades of work to produce the compendium of words.
As a word lover and former student librarian, I felt at home in the fictionalized story while recognizing lost are real.
People in power get to choose the narrative.

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

Marvelous tale imbued with the beauty and the terror of living where others have control of your will.
Humanity takes many forms and being a person may look different, depending on how you were made .
The book reminded me of the intermingling of cultures and how we are more like then we are different. George Guidall’s narration is superb.
A rich and fascinating story with so many twists and turns you have to wait till the end to find out how story is resolved .

Delicious Dark and Spicy
Revisado: 06-18-23
The telling of the story brings a fresh perspective to the mystery and myths surrounding the gods.
Circe suffers as a woman who is subject to the being underestimated until she learns her abilities to fight and survive.
Her fierce desire for knowledge and her ability to embrace her destiny as she gains wisdom is a journey worth exploring.
The narrator provides insight with subtle and engaging shading, rich imagery comes alive with her incredible intonation.
Kudos for making this artful piece relevant to the struggle women face today.
Epic, inspiring. Raw at times. I was hooked from start to finish.
