Historia
One of our most influential anthropologists reevaluates her long and illustrious career by returning to her roots and the roots of life as we know it. When Elizabeth Marshall Thomas first arrived in Africa to live among the Kalahari bushmen, she was 19, and these last surviving hunter-gatherers were living as humans had for 15,000 centuries. After a lifetime of interest in the bushmen, Thomas has come to see that their lifestyle reveals great, hidden truths about human evolution.

before the coming of the whites. The book has a sad ending, of course, as their way of life disappears into poverty. It forces one to contemplate where our species came from, what we gained, and what we lost.

Historia
Tucked away in Siberia, there are furry, four-legged creatures with wagging tails and floppy ears that are as docile and friendly as any lapdog. But, despite appearances, these are not dogs - they are foxes. They are the result of the most astonishing experiment in breeding ever undertaken - imagine speeding up thousands of years of evolution into a few decades. In 1959, biologists Dmitri Belyaev and Lyudmila Trut set out to do just that, by starting with a few dozen silver foxes from fox farms in the USSR and attempting to recreate the evolution of wolves into dogs in real time.

if you like foxes and/or dogs, check this out. It is well written, flows well, and has some touching moments. There is also quite a bit of interesting Russian history.

Historia
After first contact, humanity learns that the galaxy is a place of ancient and far-reaching authorities. The Earth has not emerged as an autonomous peer into a community of sovereign worlds, but as an involuntary entrant into a galactic society whose demands are not light. John Riley, the physicist who inadvertently touched off first contact with his research into gravitation, now sees that the implications of his discoveries lead to more than technical frontiers. The galaxy, the nature of the Universe itself, is not what humanity has believed it to be.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one. The only flaw might be too many characters that are used more as a backdrop for the developing story and don't stand on their own. Besides that, great concept, interesting ideas, intriguing plot, and some well done characters.

This is a collection of short stories from the history of Majipoor, as perceived by Hisoon by picking out soul crystals that each record someone's life. The stories are very good and kept me engaged and interested. I think this is a better effort than the first book, which was already quite good.

Historia
The Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world, equal in size to China or the United States. Yet, this arid expanse was once a verdant, pleasant land, fed by rivers and lakes. The Sahara sustained abundant plant and animal life, such as Nile perch, turtles, crocodiles, and hippos, and attracted prehistoric hunters and herders. What transformed this land of lakes into a sea of sands?

needs a rewrite
Revisado: 06-19-24
There was some good info here and there, but thus book lacks organization and focus. Very little time was devoted to why the climate changed and what caused the monsoon patterns to shift. Instead, the author describes geological evidence for aridity and wetter climate in the past, interspersed with all kinds of asides about how plants, animals, and people are adapted to the desert. There is no coherent flow to the chapters or even what each chapter is supposed to be about. The editor should have sent this back for a rewrite.

Historia
The Galahad, a faster-than-light spacecraft, carries 50 scientists and engineers on a mission to prepare Kepler 452b, Earth's nearest habitable neighbor at 1400 light years away. With Earth no longer habitable and the Mars colony slowly failing, they are humanity's best hope. After 10 years in a failed cryogenic bed - body asleep, mind awake - William Chanokh's torture comes to an end as the fog clears, the hatch opens, and his friend and fellow hacker, Tom, greets him...by stabbing a screwdriver into his heart. This is the first time William dies.

Historia
Before 1910 the American chestnut was one of the most common trees in the eastern United States. An important natural resource, chestnut wood was preferred for woodworking, fencing, and building construction, as it was rot resistant and straight grained. The hearty and delicious nuts also fed wildlife, people, and livestock.

If you love paleontology, you will love this. If you love ecology, you will be somewhat annoyed. The description of each past ecosystem focuses mostly on the animals and not much time is given to how everything works together. For example, for all the ocean ecosystems described, there is zero mention of primary production. Despite my nitpicking, I highly recommend this book.

Two nations at war. One prize beyond compare. For generations, the Hundred Isles have built their ships from the bones of ancient dragons to fight an endless war. The dragons disappeared, but the battles for supremacy persisted. Now the first dragon in centuries has been spotted in far-off waters, and both sides see a chance to shift the balance of power in their favor. Because whoever catches it will win not only glory, but the war.

meh, will not be continuing
Revisado: 05-15-24
Interesting, if flawed worldbuilding, but mediocre characters and plot. It's never really explained in sufficient detail how or why the bone ships are different from wooden ships, or shown through action why a wooden ship would not suffice. Only two characters are given any depth, and not that much of which to speak. The rest of the characters are just some names to prop up the story. The action sequences are not well written, I kept getting bored.

In this Hugo-nominated novel, an alien walks into a museum and asks if he can see a paleontologist. But the arachnid ET hasn't come aboard a rowboat with the Pope and Stephen Hawking (although His Holiness does request an audience later). a scientific exploration of God
Revisado: 02-11-24
This is quite an interesting book that explores the strong anthropic principle as a springboard for exploring why the universe exists and whether it was intentionally created. The plot is sort of light, with most of it being conversations between characters. However, it is fun to follow and does not get boring. I think this book would be interesting and enjoyable regardless of someone's religious beliefs. There is also a satisfying finish to the story.
