Historia
Every object has a ghost. There is a small yellow backpack - half unzipped, mouth yawning to the pavement, contents strewn around it (a banana, an exercise book, a pair of scissors) - abandoned on a suburban footpath. Ten feet away, the rubber stamp of tyres, resisting clamped brakes, mount the curb and cut across the path. The tracks come to an end at a crippled stop sign. The street, a tree-lined suburban road dappled in late-afternoon sunlight, is calm. But anyone walking past can feel the ghosts: the prickle on the back of their necks that tells them something happened here.

Predictable but very good
Revisado: 10-06-22
Overall, very good. Predicted all the twists but probably just because I've read/listened to so many mystery thrillers. Still kept me consistently engaged and thought it was an interesting story

Historia
When Bianca appears late one night at her brother’s house in Santa Ana, she is barely conscious, though not alone. Jubilee, wrapped in a fuzzy pink romper, is buckled into a car seat. Jubilee, who Bianca feeds and clothes and bathes and loves. Jubilee, who Bianca could not leave behind. Jubilee, a doll in her arms. Told in alternating points of view, Jubilee reveals both the haunting power of our lived experiences and the surreal possibility of the present to heal the past.

Somber and somewhat emotionally challenging but ultimately uplifting/empowering story. Beautiful writing and excellent performance.

did not disappoint
Revisado: 11-25-21
I really enjoyed this book until right before the end, when I was briefly worried I'd hate the ending. But in the last few minutes, everything changed and I loved the ending. Also, this was the best narrator I've listen to so far; get performance really added to the story.

Historia
Melanie West is getting her life back on track after a messy divorce when her grandmother, Liza Harris, asks her to join her in opening a bed-and-breakfast inn. Together, Liza and Melanie purchase a purportedly haunted mansion on the Oregon coast and jump right into clearing out the cobwebs. But while attempting to remove wallpaper in an upstairs bedroom, the new B&B owners stumble upon a very real skeleton in their closet.

stayed hopeful, but was disappointed
Revisado: 11-25-21
Held my interest till the end, but: I found many aspects of the plot unbelievable (e.g., police investigation or lack thereof, neighbors' confessions, even killer's motive); I thought Melanie's character was less relatable and more lame & irritating; dialogue and descriptions were repetitive & made the story move a little too slow; and the "romance" was forced & inauthentic. I would have accepted all of this for a juicy twist, but it was way too easy to guess who the killer was (one reason I kept listening was the hope that I'd be proved wrong, but sadly nothing surprised me). I did enjoy Liza's character and the premise of a grandmother-granddaughter teaming up to run a haunted B&B (maybe because it sounds like something my grandma & I would do), and awarded 3 stars because I was compelled enough to stick it through. Still undecided about the rest of the series, but thinking I'll probably pass.
