Historia
After a health scare, 77-year-old Barbara goes to convalesce in the sleepy Somerset village of Winsleigh Green with her sister, Pauline, who is now a widow. The sisters are like chalk and cheese - Barbara, outspoken and aloof and Pauline, good natured and homely - so it’s not long before the tension starts to rise. But when Pauline accidentally knocks down a vagrant who goes by the name of Bisto Mulligan, the ladies find themselves with another houseguest.

This was a wonderful story! Full of humor and the joys of living life to the last drop. I listen at work and literally spit coffee on my desk laughing at one point. It has multi-generational appeal.

Rough
Revisado: 10-22-22
This story is terrible. It is as if every trauma that could happen in the world was shoved into one story. There is no happiness and honestly the characters were incongruous. If you are going to write tragedy at least have your characters consistently react to it. Why even bother giving your characters an inner voice if you are going to contradict it later. People do sometimes act out of character on occasion but they don't completely change their moral paradigms. Also major trigger warning for pretty much everything.

Derived and Contrite
Revisado: 09-14-22
This reminded me of a chapter book aimed at 4th graders. I feel like the plot was constructed by throwing mystery story stereotypes into a fish bowl and the picked out at random and written into the story. Good thing it was free. The narrator was ok

Historia
Caroline Overington's stunning fiction debut is a multi-voiced novel centred around a child's death and its terrible repercussions. In 1982 Victorian police were called to a home on a housing estate an hour west of Melbourne. There, they found a five-year-old boy lying still and silent on the carpet. There were no obvious signs of trauma, but the child, Jacob, died the next day. The story made the headlines, and hundreds attended the funeral. Few people were surprised when the boy's mother and her boyfriend went to prison for the crime.

Great story
Revisado: 02-11-22
I found this story to be truly delightful and real. It showed real problems and real human emotions. I was happy to see the character struggle with real issues and not always come out perfect. They are flawed, real and great expressions of the duality of human morality. Looking forward to more stories from this author.

Great story! Even if you don't love westerns.
Revisado: 12-03-21
I don't usually read westerns, but I took a chance on this story. It was a wonderful story that explored the human motivations behind violence between peoples. Told as a series of journal entries from the perspective of a young man striking out on his own for the first time, it was a delightful story of unexpected love, adventure and loss. It brought to light the plight of a people that is easily overlooked in our whitewashed history and took them from legend to relatable. Overall a great story

Nora Silk doesn't really fit in on Hemlock Street, where every house looks the same. She's divorced. She wears a charm bracelet and high heels and red toreador pants. And the way she raises her kids is a scandal. But as time passes, the neighbors start having second thoughts about Nora. The women's apprehension evolves into admiration. The men's lust evolves into awe. The children are drawn to her in ways they can't explain.

Too Pedestrian
Revisado: 11-04-21
I struggled to finish this book. I kept waiting on a story to emerge. I felt like it was a collection of clichés pertaining to middle class American life in the 50's and 60's. From Mrs. Robinson to Grease and Rebel without a cause, there was no nuance just stereotypical nonsense. Maybe that was the point, but it felt like all character background. It barely touched upon the inner changes of the characters. It wasn't the book for me.

Excellently Composed and Compelling
Revisado: 10-19-21
This is truly one of the most exceptionally composed and compelling true crime stories to which I have ever listened. The bravery and perseverance of all involved is amazing. It honestly portrays the barriers of victims in seeking justice in sexual abuse cases. If you can listen to this story without feeling some kind of emotion, you should check your pulse.

Solid story
Revisado: 09-28-21
I have had this in my library for a bit and I could not remember why I had downloaded it. At first it didn't seem like my usual genre that I enjoy. I was pleasantly surprised by the story that was vaguely reminiscent of The Maltese Falcon. The story was well written and I found it unpredictable which I truly enjoyed.

I wanted more
Revisado: 09-14-21
I have not finished the book at this point, but I felt like I have been waiting for something to happen. The story is endearing like hanging out with your grandma and her friends. I felt like I was eaves dropping on their conversations of who had died and who was recently diagnosed. I had a difficult time connecting with the characters. I have four hours left and I honestly feel like I am waiting to know the characters. I can't say I don't like the story as I feel like I am still in the background. I just can't connect with the disjointed delivery.

Some call him friend or boss. Some call him husband or dad. Some call him son, even a favorite son. But the only title that matters to him is the one the media has given him: the Poet. A name he earned from the written words he leaves behind after he kills that are as dark and mysterious as the reason he chooses his victims. One word, two, three, a story in a poem, a secret that only Detective Samantha Jazz can solve. Because, he’s writing this story for her.
