Historia
In this, perhaps Dickens' most profound and personal novel, we are invited to share in the sentimental education of Pip, the poor boy from the village forge who risks losing himself in snobbery and selfishness when he mysteriously inherits a fortune. The story moves from the bleak Kentish marshes of Pip's childhood to a thrilling climax that mingles tragedy and triumph.

One of the best performances Audible has to offer
Revisado: 05-27-19
If you’re a lover of classics, this version of Great Expectations is one of the best I’ve heard. I had read this book many times and loved it most of my life, but Anton Lesser’s superb performance brought it to life and immersed me in a well-loved story in a way I did not expect. His renditions of the voices of the many characters is utterly realistic and never sounded silly or false. The first person character of Pip is warm and endearingly human for all his foibles and mistakes. This book is one of my top audible titles (out of 100+) due to this absolutely amazing performance.

Historia
In a ruined and toxic landscape, a community exists in a giant silo underground, hundreds of stories deep. There, men and women live in a society full of regulations they believe are meant to protect them. Sheriff Holston, who has unwaveringly upheld the silo’s rules for years, unexpectedly breaks the greatest taboo of all: He asks to go outside.

Creative Storyline, but the narration....
Revisado: 09-18-13
Would you try another book from Hugh Howey and/or Amanda Sayle?
Wool had a fresh and interesting plot, but I did find some of the concepts of the future too improbable. For instance, photography is some sort of a lost concept in this future civilization (really?). However, they still managed to use recent American slang like "frickin'", which struck me as silly.
Would you be willing to try another one of Amanda Sayle’s performances?
Amanda Sayle's regular speaking voice is pleasant. If only she'd just read the book instead of trying a host of incredibly annoying and improbable voices for different characters, most of which are just grating and absolutely awful. I listened to about a third of Wool, then ended up reading the rest on Kindle and enjoying that part much more.
Any additional comments?
Bottom line, I found the plot interesting, but I am not entranced enough to buy another Audiobook in this series and put up with the same narrator.

Historia
Yosemite became a National Park in 1890, 200 million years after the granite rocks formed within the earth; 20,000 years after glaciers eroded the gritty granite; 4,000 years after Ahwahneechee Indians were caretakers of the meadows; 2,000 years after Grizzly Giant, one of the largest and oldest sequoias was a seedling; and 41 years after gold was discovered in California.

Excellent information, but....
Revisado: 05-08-12
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
This selection contained an excellent and balanced overview of Yosemite National Park. I am a tour guide and naturalist, and am always on the lookout for information add to my repertoire of knowledge. I was pleasantly surprised to find this audible guide to be heavy on natural history information.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I would have rated this tour guide higher, but the incredibly annoying background music detracted from an otherwise enjoyable experience. The music strongly reminded me of the most annoying and cheaply produced high school geography/social studies filmstrips from the '70s. It was often overpowering-ly loud, making it hard to concentrate on the narration. Also, I am while sure the narrators were professionals, they obviously lacked a science background. As someone who works in the National Parks, their goofy pronunciations of common scientific/geologic terms drove me nuts. Next time, I wish the producers of this tour would recruit a local guide with decent communication skills who can deliver this information in a more appealing manner.
Was Yosemite Tour worth the listening time?
All that said, I still think "Yosemite Tour" is well worth the time and minimal cost.

Space and time form the very fabric of the cosmos. Yet they remain among the most mysterious of concepts. Is space an entity? Why does time have a direction? Could the universe exist without space and time? Can we travel to the past?

A+ for Content, D for Narration....
Revisado: 09-21-09
The challenging concepts in this book are presented in a way that makes them understandable to a non-scientist. Some of the examples used are presented in a lighthearted way, that could be very enjoyable if it weren't for the Narrator's monotone, deadpan way of reading, which never wavers, even when a humorous and appealing element (such as the Simpsons) is used as a component in an explanation.
It is a flashback to listening to the most boring possible high school and college lectures, where the professor has been teaching so long that there is not an ounce of excitement left for the material they are presenting, the type of communication that is famous for putting kids off science permanently.
I've always been fascinated by the concepts involved space/time and quantum physics, but I could not finish listening to this book past part two. This is the first time in listening to dozens of books on Audible that this has happened to me, and I seriously regret the two credits I wasted on this book. However, I do plan to buy the 'Fabric of the Cosmos' and read it, because the difficult concepts are vividly and cleverly presented by the author. Too bad the ideas have to suffer as a result of the narration.
