Interesting plot, painful writing

The premise of the book is interesting, but so many aspects of the writing made it hard to read.

The same exact phrases are used repetitively by each character (e.g. “blood runs thicker than water”) as if they all have the same limited vocabulary and don’t have their own voices. That feels like immature writing and made the characters unbelievable. It reminded me of the Twilight series’ use of the same 500 words over and over, as if the author couldn’t find a thesaurus.

Then there are entirely irrelevant and…gross? Creepy?… references throughout to characters’ breasts, plus poorly written sex scenes that, again, served no purpose, were cringe-worthy, and even bordered on disturbing.

Finally, while the plot was compelling, there were so many loose ends introduced but never tied up.

This was fine as a quick, cheap read but not a book I’d recommend.

Excellent excellent excellent narration. One of the best narrators I’ve encountered, and he did the colorfully sketched personalities justice in his reading of this delightful story.

The plot is compelling, especially initially (although I found my interest wandering the last several hours) but the narration is passable at best. The narrator mispronounced a number of words, audibly stumbled other numerous others, and background and drinking noises were not infrequent.

This story is deep, complex, moving, sweet and entirely believable. One of the best JAFFs I’ve ever read. Harry Frost’s narration is undeniably the best I’ve heard yet: not only does he successfully create different voices for each of the characters (including believable ones for the female characters), but doing so doesn’t prevent him from the inflections and delivery the author describes. I personally hate when the a narrator’s voices always sound the same, regardless of what is happening in the scene or how the author has written the dialogue.

With Harry Frost, when a character is described as rushing through their speech, he does just that; when another’s emotions are supposed to be evident in their speaking, he brings those emotions forth in his voicing of the character. It truly feels as if the characters and the scenes have come to life with all the depth and nuance the author wrote in the original story.

I will gladly seek out more of Lucy Marin’s and Harry Frost’s works, and hope to see them collaborate more in the future.
