A bird's eye view, but a good one
Revisado: 08-27-22
Excellent overview of the past 250 years of industrial development from a broadly classical-liberal perspective. There are so many subjects I wish he had had the time to go into greater depth on (the development of the German chemical industry in particular), but that is the nature of an overview course. The lecturer is vastly more optimistic about the sustainability and benedits of industrialism than I am, but I would rather listen to someone who's enthusiastic about his subject than one who hates it.

Historia
At the dawn of the last millennium in the year 1000, Europe was one of the world's more stagnant regions-an economically undeveloped, intellectually derivative, and geopolitically passive backwater, with illiteracy, starvation, and disease the norm for almost everyone. Yet only three centuries later, all of this had changed.

I feel bad for being the guy who's adding the 1067th review of this, lol. It's an excellent overview, like most Great Courses products, even if the lecturer has rather more than the usual amount of vocal tics.

Historia
John Sark is the hero who was raised by animals (like Tarzan) in the temperate, twilight zone of Mercury, then captured and civilized. He's a mercenary on Mars now, dealing with humanoid Martians and their extremely nasty pre-humanoid race enemies. The fights are brutal and frantic yet detailed enough to bring you right into the midst of the action; the suspense is real and tingling. A wonderful listen.

Captain Future flies into action, displaying the most exciting aspects of science fiction. Although modeled to a degree after Doc Savage, Captain Future is also the ultimate space opera hero. Coming complete with not only a tragic, yet inspiring origin story driving him into defending interstellar justice, everyone and everything Curt Newton encounters is colorful, vibrant, and over the top, definite trademarks of the best space opera.

Much better than it has any right to be.
Revisado: 01-14-21
I got this as some background reading for an Old Solar System project I'm working on, and it was exactly what I expected. Captain Future is pulp trash, but decently well written pulp trash. The ludicrous plot is better paced and structured than in some much more well-regarded works I could mention, and the exotic settings are described with verve. The narrator is excellent, and brings a bit of that mid-century radio style to his reading.
But this is, in the end, a book thay you absolutely can judge by its cover. If you 're the kind of person who finds something called "Captain Future: Man of Tomorrow" enticing, you probably will get a few cheap thrills out of it. If you're hoping that maybe that title hides something with a bit more depth, well, it doesn't.

Historia
Full of illuminating anecdotes drawn from memoirs, correspondence, and government documents, The British in India weaves a rich tapestry of the everyday experiences of the Britons who found themselves in “the jewel in the crown” of the British Empire. David Gilmour captures the substance and texture of their work, home, and social lives, and illustrates how these transformed across the several centuries of British presence and rule in the subcontinent, from the East India Company’s first trading station in 1615 to the twilight of the Raj and Partition and Independence in 1947.

Can't recommend it highly enough. Heavy on primary sources, this book extensively examines how individual Britons of all social backgrounds living in colonial India lived, thought, and died. A comprehensive documentation of a vanished society.

Historia
At various times in a span of fifteen years, John McPhee made geological field surveys in the company of Eldridge Moores, a tectonicist at the University of California at Davis. The result of these trips is Assembling California, a cross-section in human and geologic time, from Donner Pass in the Sierra Nevada through the golden foothills of the Mother Lode and across the Great Central Valley to the wine country of the Coast Ranges, the rock of San Francisco, and the San Andreas family of faults.

Flashman IN SPACE
Revisado: 10-05-18
Do you lile George Fraser's "Flashman" stories, about a cowardly, hedonistic rogue who manages to accidentally wind up a hero? Do you like the grim darkness of the Warhammer 40K universe, but find the quality of the novels set in it very hit-or-miss? Then you're like me, and will very much enjoy the pulpy fun of Sandy Mitchell's Ciaphas Cain stories. The narration is professional and well-done, and the use of a different narrator for Inquisitor Vail's notes reqlly helps preserve their charm.

Historia
Against Nature was one of the most shocking French novels of the 19th century. When it was published in 1884, it thrilled the aesthetes, the poets, and the intellectuals of Europe on both sides of the Channel (notably Oscar Wilde) because for all its lofty tone, it had, as its core, an unbridled decadence, and it was this same character that challenged, even horrified, established bourgeois society.

An excellent reading of the Decadent classic
Revisado: 06-13-17
I had previously read Á Rebours some years ago, and picked up this audio as a refresher for a project I'm working on. The novel retains all of the unsettling force I remembered. The translation used is very subtle, and Mr. Boulton's reading is fluent, precise, and artful, without showiness or excessive flourish.
