I absolutely loved the story and how it evolved from beginning to end. I makes me want to start making baby quilts like I use to do. I love the family stories and especially how a blanket dance was used to raise funds for those in need. Thanks for this memorable novel, Oscar.

I first read this book in 1969 at University of Colorado Denver Center/Black Studies Class. I've been seeing more and more Baldwin quotes popping up on social media regularly, so I wanted to re-read Baldwin. This "manifesto" speaks volumes regarding today's Black and White citizens and our state in America on the brink of losing our democracy because of the incompetent president elected in 2016. What spoke to me with shock was his position that the Black people will never be free until the White citizens have freed themselves of their own prejudices and positioning on all the various other citizens that live in America. So White people must first free themselves of their baggage before anyone can be free. This book is a great synopsis of race in America and the Black citizens position.

I found this Audible book very gripping and engaging. I had to layer my emotions and my mind over this new history I was hearing. I realized how many gaps I have in knowledge of Black History. I loved how so much ground was covered in few words. I've seen the author on different talk shows and Amanpour. I hope to see him on repeats to gain even more perspective on his technique which should grab young people's imaginations to go out and change the world. Our vote is sacred and we now can look at what's coming much sooner.

This turned out to be my summer reading project. It is an extraordinary adventure into the lives of the Obama family. I listened intently, even though I knew what was about to happen, because I witnessed it, but I was drawn into it. My favorite parts were about the garden and the 2,000 pounds of food it produced yearly. Hearing Michelle read it was soothing to my soul. I highly recommend it.
