It is 1879, and the young Detective Sergeant Sholto Lestrade has his work cut out for him as he investigates mysterious goings-on at "Lord" George Sanger's Circus. First, the best juggler in Europe is shot in full view of a thousand people. Then Huge Hughie the dwarf dies an agonising death whilst performing the Ether Trick. Finally, the Great Bolus dies by swallowing the wrong sword. And all of this comes after two bodies are found with multiple slashes.

M J Trow gives a new slant on Conan Doyle's Lestrade.
Sergeant (later Inspector) Lestrade hunts a killer in Sanger's circus of Victorian times learning that "nothing is at it appears in a circus".
I have read this book before & enjoyed it so downloaded the audio version expecting the same pleasure. I don't know why the author decided to narrate his books but in my opinion it was a big mistake. M J Trow does not narrate his story well which is a great pity.

Well done but not my favorite G.Heyer

An Enjoyable Romantic Web

A delightful entangled plot that Heyer easily unravels never letting the reader/listener feel the story is being overly contrived.
Unlike previous reviewers I was quite dismayed by Sian Phillips narration. I'm sure Sian Phillips does her best but her voice is quite hoarse. It is a great pity as Sian tries to ensure the various characters have individual voices for the listener but she is hampered by her damaged vocal folds. Serena is described as having a low pitched muscial voice but instead sounds like she should be auditioning for one of the witches in Macbeth!
I suggest that prospective buyers of this book listen very closely to the sample & decide for themselves.

Simple pleasure

An interesting story where Ms Heyer fleshes out the secondary characters more then usual. In fact I've often thought that the 'cast' took the reader's attention from the hero & heroine! Ms Heyer manages to ensure a very satisfactory ending as usual.
I've read this story a few times & while I enjoyed the book it wasn't a favourite of mine. That changed when I listened to Eve Matheson's narration; she pitches her tones & adds accents where appropriate. She brought all the characters to life; her interpretation of the spoilt heiress Tiffany's speech was so excellent I found myself muttering, 'Spoilt brat!' when Tiffany was throwing a tantrum.
