Historia
Jeanette is a bright and rebellious orphan who is adopted into an evangelical household in the dour, industrial North of England and finds herself embroidering grim religious mottoes and shaking her little tambourine for Jesus. But as this budding missionary comes of age, and comes to terms with her unorthodox sexuality, the peculiar balance of her God-fearing household dissolves. Jeanette’s insistence on listening to truths of her own heart and mind - and on reporting them with wit and passion - makes for an unforgettable chronicle of an eccentric, moving passage into adulthood.

Historia
It’s spring and Three Pines is reemerging after the harsh winter. But not everything buried should come alive again. Not everything lying dormant should reemerge. But something has. As the villagers prepare for a special celebration, Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir find themselves increasingly worried. A young man and woman have reappeared in the Sûreté du Québec investigators’ lives after many years. The two were young children when their troubled mother was murdered, leaving them damaged, shattered. Now they’ve arrived in the village of Three Pines. But to what end?

Huge Disappointment
Revisado: 12-13-22
Many SPOILERS are included in this review; beware.
I have read every Gamache book and have LOVED each one. But this is not up to snuff.
The plot (worst/most famous killer EVER lives in 3 Pines with Gamache for months ... really?) is ridiculous.
MANY unanswered questions, such as how did Fleming connect with Sam and Fiona; did they know about him before?
Whose engineering ring was in the dust in the basement?
Why did Sam tie up Harriet and not kill her? Ditto the dogs. Two heartless killers spared them? Unlikely.
How did Fleming know Reine Marie was in UK?
Who drew on the original painting in the museum in a matter of minutes after Reine-Marie left? What was that about anyway?
MOST stupid of all: Fleming gets contact lenses, shoe lifts and grows a beard and Gamache did not even suspect him as the town minister? C'mon.
I am still in shock as to how bad this was.

Huge Disappointment
Revisado: 10-01-22
WAY too long, also. I stuck with this to the end for one reasons only: I love Robin and Strike, and I wanted to follow their relationship forward.
The online characters in social media worlds and in an online game have complicated names like "fluffy paws" and "Amaley" that are hard to keep track of. Their conversations are long and hard to follow. Some are nasty skin heads and they use the N word (bleeped out in Audible) and the C word (not bleeped out; I wish it had been!). VERY hard to listen to.
Absolutely my least favorite Strike book so far. Disappointed

Chet is Amazing
Revisado: 06-26-22
If you love dogs, you will love author Quinn's portrayal of the dog's point of view. Hilarious, and right on! The narrator does a great job vocalizing Chet's thoughts. HOWEVER, for the mystery or crime fiction lover, the stories are weak. They don't make much sense, and they sort of meander. I still recommend the books because of Chet's hilarity. Example, "In my experience, most humans look better with their clothes on." "What is that breeze? Oh yes ... it's my tail."

Frustrated by Secrets
Revisado: 04-18-22
I should have known. It says right in the description that there are family secrets. But YOW it is hard for me to read a story in which people consistently, repeatedly leave out important parts of the story and lie to each other. Characters that are not forthright drive me crazy. I stuck with the book because I did want to know the truth, but I raced to the end to get it over with.

Historia
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

Dull, annoying characters and predictable story
Revisado: 01-14-21
Perhaps because i LOVED "A Man Called Ove" and "My Grandmother Asked Me ... ," I expected to love this as well (same author). The characters were so annoying for the first 1/3 of the book that I almost returned it. But my book club is discussing it next week, so I felt I had to finish it. The "twist" was obvious, the heart-felt "lessons" were saccharine, and I simply couldn't wait for it to be over.
The narrator was dreadful.
I gave it a 2 rather than a 1 because there were a few redeeming moments.

For 50 years, only I’ve known what really happened to The Girl in Green. And now, these many years later, my secret may kill me.
