Historical overview of what's ailing us. A good listen in the age of Trump. This is who we truly are.

we are currently in denial about the issue of race in this country but when we are ready to confront the issue as we cannot move forward without doing that, information in this book will offer a sobering record of our history.

Should be named the history of the French monarchy. I suggest skipping everything before Louis XIV. ..even then you will be disappointed to learn that the Renaissance was only made possible by the good graces of monarchs, what a disgrace! if you want to know more about Voltaire, Rousseau, Pascal, Victor Hugo, Pierce and Mary Curry, Dumas, you are out of luck but if you are into Monarchs that ascend to power at 2 or 4, then this book is right for you.

I have been enjoying the first 4 prehistory podcasts of this series on French history. While specifics on France are highlighted, these lectures give a short but deep overview applicable across Europe and the Middle East. This segment on metals age is one of the best I've heard for bringing that period to life. It really makes it clear how a couple of technological changes impacted day to day life in a myriad of ways. It really clarifies for me why social structures started growing and becoming more formalized, and less egalitarian, as a result of technological development. This learning can be extrapolated to other cultures one is interested in as well.

It’s important for US citizens to understand the history of Ottoman Empire which has as much of more influence on our modern world as Greek and Roman empires. This empire was vast in territory and long lasting - 700 years - and played a major role in development of Christianity, Islam and left a legacy in modern arts and science. It also was an important key to World War 1 and the resulting geopolitics of the Middle East, Russia and Eastern Europe that we face today.

I have listened to three if Ken Harl’s Great Courses so far. Ken Harl is an excellent teacher and has such deep knowledge of Anatolian History you will learn a lot even if you are a history buff. His delivery is engaging and humorous while representing serious scholarship. I found myself needing to relisten to chapters or sections due to the multilayered information and the fast pace of dates, places and names. You might want to slow down speed of playback at times. Even if you are not particularly interested in Turkey today, which has a strong movie industry on Netflix, you will still learn a lot about European history from a different lens. Middle East history is here as well but I feel the need to read more on books on that.

These lectures touch on a lot of facts and phenomenon deep into history and illuminate how the area that is Turkey today is a foundation of world wide civilization. Thanks for illuminating a little known area of the world that I now want to visit. The lecturer speaks quite fast and it is challenging to capture all the points. By using the audible speed control I was able to absorb more of the info. I wish there had been more detailed focus on the Seljuk and Ottoman Turk development. That subject is only a couple chapters yet it is the basis of modern Turkey and least familiar to a western audience.

I have not read the actual book that this summarizes. However, the content appears to be well covered in an organized way. For example, this summary numbers the points within a chapter so you can easily follow the logic. I feel like I learned the main nutritional points that I can easily refer back to in this summary for reference without slogging through the whole book. I would keep this on my bookshelf. I have also read another summary of the same book and feel that this summary is a bit more detailed while still being a summary.

I was motivated to go to the book author's website and listen to more in depth information via video chapters. After reading this summary, I was motivated to try a vegan diet (again) for the health benefits and so far I have stayed with it for one week. I am already familiar with vegetarian foods and I don't do dairy and gluten so not that hard a switch for me. Sticking with it will be the challenge as I love chicken.

Comparison of readers/narrators performance: While I prefer the organizational structure of this summary, I prefer the reader's performance in the other summary. This narrator sounds like he is reading a script and mispronounced a couple key words (e.g., saying "casual" instead of "causal"). It was not a big deal though. I would still recommend this summary slightly over the other one, maybe because I read this one first. They both do a good job.
