Historia
Robert McCall is a former covert operations officer for the CIA who tries to atone for past sins by offering, free of charge, his services as a protector, an investigator, and a troubleshooter—often literally. Aided by a group of sometimes-mysterious contacts, some of whom date back to his spying days, McCall traverses the streets of New York City, visiting justice upon those who prey upon the weak. A woman finds herself the target of a Chechen nightclub owner. The club is actually a front for an elite assassination service—run by an old enemy of McCall’s.

Not my McColl
Revisado: 09-22-20
For me, McColl is a silver-haired Englishman. Not a tough American. The juxtaposition of the old Englishman in a tough American city was one of the main things that made The Equalizer interesting. This story just falls flat. McColl as an American doesn't work for me. My interest wanes and I go on to something else, then I come back and try again. I'm struggling to finish it.

Historical mystery with atmosphere
Revisado: 04-26-20
I love this Li Du series and I'm hoping for a #4. My comments apply to all 3 books. I enjoy the atmosphere and daily activities almost as much as the solving of the mystery. Li Du is a thoughtful, intelligent, quiet sleuth.

Historia
A group of adventurers searching for a cure for comatose children find themselves trapped in a sequence of virtual worlds, the only opponents of a conspiracy of the rich to live forever in a dream. Now, they are forced to make an uneasy alliance with their only surviving former enemy against his treacherous sidekick Johnny Wulgaru, a serial killer with a chance to play God forever. Few science fiction sagas have achieved the level of critical acclaim - and best-selling popularity - as Tad Williams's Otherland novels.

The Ending to a Wonderful Story
Revisado: 08-02-19
This is the ending of a grand story. The story is intriguing with many threads and interesting characters.
If you like long stories where the characters find themselves in strange circumstances, trying to survive against insurmountable odds, you'll like this series. Surprises right up to the end.
Some books are 'novels' and some books are 'stories'. This series is an amazing 'story' told by a wonderful storyteller.

Historia
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Reminds me of Inspector Morse type detective
Revisado: 06-10-18
Loved it! Good British police procedural. Good character development. Senior detective like Inspector Morse or even Frost. My favorite kind of story.

Can't connect with the characters
Revisado: 02-14-18
I really wanted to like this series. I like the premise.
I just don't like the characters. I can't connect to them. I don't care about them.
I've started 4 times to read these books. I'd leave them for a while, then think. "I really want to read this.", try again, and end up quitting to go onto something more interesting.
I get the impression that the author has a very negative, jaded view of humans, especially men. Just one more story where men are portrayed as weak, sniveling, liars. I don't share that view. I'm not interested. Perhaps they change and become better people as the story progresses, but I don't care enough about them to soldier on. I'm disappointed.

Play the movie in your mind with more details
Revisado: 10-07-16
I loved this novelization. It has been a few years since I watched the Alien series of movies. I enjoyed this audio a lot. I really enjoyed the extra details that were not in the movie.
(I've seen negative reviews "because there was no swearing"... Bwahahahaha! Really???)

Enjoyed this book
Revisado: 08-25-16
Good mystery. Kept me guessing.
The backdrop of the mystery is post WWI India. This book comments on the negative effect that oppressing a people has not only on the oppressed but also the ones doing the oppressing.

Historia
Moscow police inspector Porfiry Rostnikov has adapted well to life without Communism. But under the Soviets, blood feuds were pursued in the dark halls of bureaucracy, and now they take place in the streets. An international drug ring has chosen Moscow as its next port of call, and the only thing standing in its way is the budding Russian mob, headed by a young man whose brutality is matched only by his madness. In a gang war of this magnitude, no civilian is safe.

Enjoy Rostnikov stories, not so much this topic.
Revisado: 03-27-16
I'm really enjoying the Inspector Rostnikov series about the Russian detective, but I had a hard time reading parts of this one since one of the main topics was catching a dog fighting ring and it had some dog fight scenes. I would have liked a different topic.
I think that dog fighting is horrific and would not have read this book if it had not been a Rostnikov story.

The Victims: An unscrupulous cab driver. The killer's own frightened wife. Most troublesome of all, an outspoken dissident, watched closely by the KGB, whose trial had been set for the very next day. The Weapons: A heavy iron-headed hammer. A rusty, antiquated sickle. And a broken vodka bottle. The Cops:Tkach, who seduces suspects into confessing with his apparent innocence. Karpo, a bit of a Tartar, a bit of a vampire, a stolid saint of the Soviet faith.

Mystery with a USSR/Russian Twist
Revisado: 02-19-16
I am really enjoying this series. Each book now is like visiting my friend, Inspector Porfiry Rostnikov. I'm on book 8 of the series and enjoy the mysteries with the unique environment of the USSR/Russian system.
Sometimes navigating the system safely can be almost as tricky as solving the mystery.
