Historia
Twice in the first half of the last century, the great powers engaged in wars that killed nearly 70 million people, with the aftermath of each shaking the international political system, changing the maps of the world, and setting the scene for the next great conflict. And for most of the past 50 years, the Cold War dominated international politics. Is this the history we are condemned to repeat? This series of eight lectures about international politics will hone your ability to approach that question with knowledge and insight.

Great content, but dated.
Revisado: 11-05-24
There is no question that this is packed with knowledge. It would be great to get an update given how old the lecture is.

Historia
Scott Galloway teaches brand strategy at NYU's Stern School of Business, but his most popular lectures deal with life strategy, not business. The Algebra of Happiness: Notes on the Pursuit of Success, Love, and Meaning draws on Professor Galloway's mix of anecdotes and no-BS insight to share hard-won wisdom about life's challenges, along with poignant personal stories.

A great book for young adults. A little repetitive and his performance a bit rigid, Scott has something to say and I hope more young people get to hear it.

Historia
From the acclaimed authors of the runaway New York Times bestseller 2034 comes another explosive work of speculative fiction set twenty years further in the future, at a moment when a radical leap forward in artificial intelligence combines with America’s violent partisan divide to create an existential threat to the country, and the world.

More insight, less drama
Revisado: 04-23-24
I felt 2034 had too much fiction and too little insight from the Admiral and this even more distant from what I would say is ideal. I normally don't read fiction, but this series peaked my interest because I was interested in what the Admiral's concerns were and felt it could be intelligently explored with this format, but alas I think the drama was overdone. AI and will play a much bigger role in the world by 2054 than portrayed in this novel. The fictional characters could have had more interesting dialogue if they had more subject expertise. There is also less tension and shock in this offering than the last.

a great read, not the best audio

This is definitely one of the books I've read on the movie making process. The audio could be better, but it works well enough.

Historia
When Michael Pollan set out to research how LSD and psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) are being used to provide relief to people suffering from difficult-to-treat conditions such as depression, addiction, and anxiety, he did not intend to write what is undoubtedly his most personal book. But upon discovering how these remarkable substances are improving the lives not only of the mentally ill but also of healthy people coming to grips with the challenges of everyday life, he decided to explore the landscape of the mind in the first person as well as the third.

Articulating the Indescribable
Revisado: 07-13-23
This was an effortless read. Michael is a brilliant writer and has done a masterful job articulating the indescribable. I started reading this book about a week before I had my first psycybin experience. My experience was exactly as he described. Beautiful. I hope more people can discover the healing power of psychedelics.

Historia
Food. There's plenty of it around, and we all love to eat it. So why should anyone need to defend it? Because in the so-called Western diet, food has been replaced by nutrients, and common sense by confusion—most of what we’re consuming today is longer the product of nature but of food science. The result is what Michael Pollan calls the American Paradox: The more we worry about nutrition, the less healthy we see to become.

Michael Pollan should have read the Audiobook
Revisado: 07-20-21
I’ve really enjoyed every interview I’ve seen with Michael Pollan. He seems quite knowledgeable, yet without any sense of arrogance. In Defense of Food: An Eaters Manifesto it’s a bold title and the language of the author was also strong. It was therefore a bit much to have a narrator that exaggerated that tone. It came across as aristocratic, even though I agreed with most of it.

Worth it.
Revisado: 06-15-21
Writing requires a lot of thought and imagination, but structure exists. As original as you may think you and your story are, its beneficial to run through the possibilities explored in this book to see if the historical patterns of story arcs are present in your story and whether or not you could improve it by thickening your characters with layers. I have written 6 feature films. Listening to this book was like a fireworks display as my stories either fell into line or defied the structure of the authors 3 main story arcs. I loved it and feel like I have plenty of ammunition to return to my stories and improve on them. I appreciate the authors clarity and ability to give meaning and rigidity to things I’ve known and implemented in my writing without knowing it.

Historia
Are we "noble in reason"? Perfect, in God's image? Far from it, says New York University psychologist Gary Marcus. In this lucid and revealing book, Marcus argues that the mind is not an elegantly designed organ but a "kluge", a clumsy, cobbled-together contraption. He unveils a fundamentally new way of looking at the human mind - think duct tape, not supercomputer - that sheds light on some of the most mysterious aspects of human nature.

Historia
Humans are tribal. We need to belong to groups. In many parts of the world, the group identities that matter most - the ones that people will kill and die for - are ethnic, religious, sectarian, or clan-based. But because America tends to see the world in terms of nation-states engaged in great ideological battles - capitalism vs. communism, democracy vs. authoritarianism, the "free world" vs. the "axis of evil" - we are often spectacularly blind to the power of tribal politics. Time and again this blindness has undermined American foreign policy.

Revelatory.
Revisado: 03-15-18
In light of the 2016 election, I have really struggled to make sense of the emerging extremes within American society. I have spent the last year and a half consuming all the literature I can on evolutionary psychology and tribalism and been inundated with information to the point that it has become hard to articulate much with clarity. This book however does a wonderful job weaving a simple narrative that explains what is gnawing at the American soul. Amy Chua has done a wonderful job presenting concrete examples with a strong scientific foundation in a practical way that everyone can understand. If you care or are concerned at all about the state of the United States, I highly recommend this book, it was an insightful and thoroughly enjoyable read.

Historia
Every day we work hard to motivate ourselves, the people we live with, the people who work for and do business with us. In this way much of what we do can be defined as being motivators. From the boardroom to the living room, our role as motivators is complex, and the more we try to motivate partners and children, friends and coworkers, the clearer it becomes that the story of motivation is far more intricate and fascinating than we've assumed.

A brilliant little book
Revisado: 01-17-18
The trick with these short books is to be entertaining, have something worth saying and to not repeat yourself. Dan Ariely did a superb job of this. This some shallow self-help kick in the pants but an in-depth look at motivation that is easily digestible for the lay person. Simon Jones also does an impressive job at narration. Having listened to 25 days worth of audiobooks this year alone, this narrator is about as good as it gets.
