Historia
In May 1845, Sir John Franklin, commander of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, departed England to seek a navigable route across the top of the Americas. He and his 128 men never returned. Four years later, Royal Navy Lieutenant Frederick Robinson and Assistant Surgeon Edward Adams are determined to find the men missing in the Arctic. While they are united in purpose, they are divided in ambition. The pious and idealistic Adams strives to save his boyhood hero. Robinson hungers for promotion through the Admiralty ranks.

Great writing. Brilliant Performance.
Revisado: 02-07-25
I'll start with the obvious. If you know anything about Sir John Franklin's lost expedition to discover the Northwest Passage, or the subsequent efforts to find out what happened to him and his men, then you know there are no happy endings to be had in this story. This book is for readers who are fascinated by the men who sacrificed everything to distinguish themselves during the Great Age of Exploration. Colin Mills' writing is spectacularly evocative and Steve West's performance makes every word come to life. I loved this book and will likely read it again after I've taken some time to digest it.

Historia
My name’s Ernest Cunningham. I used to be a fan of reading Golden Age murder mysteries, until I found myself with a haphazard career getting stuck in the middle of real-life ones. I’d hoped, this Christmas, that any self-respecting murderer would kick their feet up and take it easy over the holidays. I was wrong. So here I am, backstage at the show of world-famous magician Rylan Blaze, whose benefactor has just been murdered. My suspects are all professional tricksters: masters of the art of misdirection.

So Fun!
Revisado: 10-28-24
Even after the novelty of Benjamin Stevenson's approach has worn off, these books are still fun. The themes are clever, the mystery is crazily complicated, the characters are engaging, and Barton Welch's performance is outstanding. I will gobble up every book Stevenson adds to this series.

Catherine Steadman is an excellent reader
Revisado: 08-05-24
No one could perform a Catherine Steadman audiobook better than Catherine Steadman. She gets all the stars for her performance. However I didn't like the topic of this book. It's just not for me and Steadman's plot doesn't cover new ground. I found her other books are a lot more clever and engrossing.

Historia
Riverside Close is a picture-perfect community. The six exclusive and attractive houses are tucked far away from the noise and grime of city life, allowing the residents to enjoy beautiful gardens, pleasant birdsong, and tranquility from behind the security of a locked gate. It is the perfect idyll, until the Kentworthy family arrives, with their four giant, gas-guzzling cars, gaggle of shrieking children, and plans for a garish swimming pool in the backyard. Obvious outsiders, the Kentworthys do not belong in Riverside Close, and quickly offend every last one of the neighbors.

Revisado: 04-19-24
I'm loving this series. This story adds depth and background to Horowitz/Hawthorn relationship. I won't give anything away about the mystery but I will say it's interesting and perplexing. Definitely memorable. And Rory Kinnear's performance is outstanding!

Historia
This is a tale of murder. Or maybe that’s not quite true. At its heart, it’s a love story, isn’t it? Lana Farrar is a reclusive ex-movie star and one of the most famous women in the world. Every year, she invites her closest friends to escape the English weather and spend Easter on her idyllic private Greek island.

Another Winner from Michaelides!
Revisado: 01-22-24
Well written, lots of twists and turns, and even a few easter eggs for those who have read Michaelides' other books. This is an especially good one for people who read a lot of mysteries because it gets very meta at times. And you have to know your way around a psychological thriller to appreciate what Michaelides has done here.

Historia
Titus Crown is the first Black sheriff in the history of Charon County, Virginia. In recent decades, quiet Charon has had only two murders. But after years of working as an FBI agent, Titus knows better than anyone that while his hometown might seem like a land of moonshine, cornbread, and honeysuckle, secrets always fester under the surface. Then a year to the day after Titus’s election, a school teacher is killed by a former student and the student is fatally shot by Titus’s deputies. As Titus investigates the shootings, he unearths terrible crimes.

This Is What A Great Writer Can Do
Revisado: 12-05-23
POV: The writing teacher says: "okay, you've all had your fun with this familiar serial killer storyline and stereotypical characters. Now let's give the assignment to a truly great writer and see what they can do with it." Enter S.A. Cosby who hands in All The Sinners Bleed. Yes, we've read this storyline and met these characters in other books. But Cosby makes every word new, finds the core humanity in every character, and still manages to thrill us when the big confrontation takes place at the end. I LOVED IT.
And Adam Lazarre-White's performance is outstanding!

Historia
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

Mick Herron knows how to capture the outrageousness, intricacies, banalities and humanity of the spy business. One moment he’s got you laughing at things you know you shouldn’t, and the next he’s got rooting for people you’d never want to meet in real life. Be sure to read a couple of Slough House books first to get all the references.

Excellent!
Revisado: 09-04-23
This book is really for fans of classic detective fiction. All the clues are there... although I'd defy any reader/listener to put them together in the right order. The story is engaging, the characters are well-developed, and, at the end, we get the satisfaction of hearing our amateur detective tie-up every loose end in a clever summation. One of the best things about the story is the setting. Lots of books use a time, a place and a people affected by war, but the war is rarely more than a backdrop or a way to work in a few clues. A Gentleman's Murder weaves the impact of WWI into every character and scene to create emotional authenticity. Exceptionally well written and Raphael Corkhill's narration is outstanding. And bonus! I just found out that Huang's new book is about to be released so I pre-ordered it.

Who hasn’t wondered for a split second what the world would be like if a person who is the object of your affliction ceased to exist? But then you’ve probably never heard of The McMasters Conservatory, dedicated to the consummate execution of the homicidal arts. To gain admission, a student must have an ethical reason for erasing someone who deeply deserves a fate no worse (nor better) than death. The campus of this “Poison Ivy League” college—its location unknown to even those who study there—is where you might find yourself the practice target of a classmate.

Bring your dark sense of humor and enjoy!
Revisado: 04-21-23
This book is fun, clever and dark. It is, after all, about how to murder correctly. The students' murder plots are wildly intricate and the author gives us a chance to get to know the characters through their motives and modus operandi. Very good narration, too. I had a smile on my face the whole way through. I might be going to hell for that...

As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don’t mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she’s used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos "pretending" to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously.
