Historia
Neal Carey is not your usual private eye. A graduate student at Columbia University, he grew up on the streets of New York, usually on the wrong side of the law. Then he met a P.I. who introduced him to the Bank, an exclusive institution with a sideline in keeping its wealthy clients happy and out of trouble. They pay Neal's college tuition, and Neal gets an education that can't be found in any textbook, from learning how to trail a suspect to mastering the proper way to search a room. Now it's payback time.

Superb, practical, effective
Revisado: 11-13-20
If you need help with your negotiating skills, look no further. This book is the best there is. It provides you with the why current theory works or does not work, it provides a better alternative, plenty of examples, practical applications, and most importantly, years of experience on the field by the author. it is definitely a reference book for your bookshelf. I, for one, will purchase a hard copy of it now that I have listened to it read.

A powerful storyteller
Revisado: 10-18-20
I am sure reality surpasses fiction. Very well researched and told, The Power of the Dog paints a convincing picture of the futility of the war on drugs. It does so, however, with a clear sympathy towards the leftist movements of Latin America, including theology of liberation, as if they were less guilty of the crime of drugs than the American purchasers of the stuff.
In the process, the author cynically leaves nothing sacred untouched. That bothered me. I found him at his best when he dealt with the Irish and Italian mafia families in New York, and at his weakest when he crossed the border and tried an American centered explanation of Latin America's political and social mentality. There he fell into too many CNN type clichés un my view.
Still, the story is great, with all the condiments of a fast paced thriller. Excellently read by Ray Porter.

Historia
Daniel Graham MacCormick - Mac for short - seems to have a pretty good life. At age 35 he's living in Key West, owner of a 42-foot charter fishing boat, The Maine. Mac served five years in the army as an infantry officer, with two tours in Afghanistan. He returned with the Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, scars that don't tan, and a boat with a big bank loan. Truth be told, Mac's finances are more than a little shaky. One day Mac is sitting in the famous Green Parrot Bar in Key West, contemplating his life....

Action comes in too late
Revisado: 07-14-20
Perhaps it was my ignorance. I was expecting more of an Elmore Leonard story... or Grisham action type novel. One of the two. This book is neither. DeMille goes into a lot of Cuban American information together with much girly romance stuff before any real action comes into play in the plot. The book was written obviously for a mixed audience. The plot is not bad, too slow to develop into something exciting but the narration is great. Again, the story flows well, but I expected a bit more complexity than what the book delivered in the end, with few real questions answered. This was my first DeMille book, so, as I said before: maybe I started with the wrong one. I will try another one with a story more geared towards guys. One with more bullets and less girl psychology.

Historia

Historia
Since it was first published more than 25 years ago, Robert Fitzgerald's prizewinning translation of Homer's battle epic has become a classic in its own right: a standard against which all other versions of The Iliad are compared. Fitzgerald's work is accessible, ironic, faithful, written in a swift vernacular blank verse that "makes Homer live as never before" ( Library Journal).

A Perfect Rendition
Revisado: 08-27-18
For Fagles' fans, Fitzgerald's translation is almost as poetically beautiful as Fagles. Narrated by Dan Stevens it is perfect. It brings all of the drama of The Illiad to life. I found myself with tears and smiling as the book ended, as I felt as much a part of the conflict as the Trojans and Achaeans. Listening to Stevens was better than my own reading of the book.

Historia
July 1863. The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia is invading the North. General Robert E. Lee has made this daring and massive move with seventy thousand men in a determined effort to draw out the Union Army of the Potomac and mortally wound it. His right hand is General James Longstreet, a brooding man who is loyal to Lee but stubbornly argues against his plan. Opposing them is an unknown factor: General George Meade, who has taken command of the Army only two days before what will be perhaps the crucial battle of the Civil War.

A Great Book Beautifully Read
Revisado: 08-27-18
Hoye's rendition of The Killer Angels brings all the humanity and drama of the Civil War to the surface. If you love history or historical novels, this is a book for you, specially well rendered by Stephen Hoye's ability to read with Irish, yankee and different southern accents throughout the book. Two thumbs up!
