Historia
Jacques McKeown is the most celebrated author of star-pilot fiction in the galaxy. He's rich, famous, and living in luxury, and his universe-wide fanbase eagerly awaits any news of his next book. There's just one small hitch. He's not Jacques McKeown. He's Dashford Pierce, star pilot and con artist, and if only the impatient calls from his publisher were the worst of his problems. There's also the last vestige of the Henderson crime gang, trouble brewing in the retired star-pilot community, and a small matter of somebody trying to kill him.

A fun and lighthearted romp with ... spoilers
Revisado: 04-28-25
This was a great capstone to the "Jacque Mckeown" stories (if it is the finale, I guess we'll see), and Yahtzee has crafted another deliciously sarcastic trek across the universe and across the metaphorical landscape of scifi lampooning novels.
what I wasn't expecting [beware spoilers]...
was that it would also be a poignant and intelligent take on the nature of ai and a possible future based on the current trajectory of modern technology.
Definitely recommended for either of the above elements!

Entertaining and creative, and thoroughly unique
Revisado: 07-11-23
The many lives of Stephen Leeds-- Just A Few of the Lives of Brandon Sanderson.
This particular tale was quite different from anything else I've read from him. And I've read most of his library. But as usual, I was intrigued, I laughed, and I cared about the characters.
I was also impressed with the narrator, who did a terrific job with what must have been a difficult task.

Historia
A report on how the greed of a privileged few, subsidized by public funding, creates substantial profits for themselves from mass human suffering. This was a speech given by General Butler during a nationwide tour in the early 1930's, but it applies even more today! Listen as he frankly discusses, from his experience as a career military officer, how business interests commercially benefit from warfare. He then suggests several practical solutions for reducing the pillage.

Get Everyone You Know To Read This Book
Revisado: 06-05-23
During boot camp in 1997, we were taught about Marine Corps history and the three greatest heroes the Marine Corps had ever had. Foremost among these, the most decorated member of any military branch in American history, was General Smedley Butler. We were taught to emulate his courage and his dedication. We were not told, and I did not find out until 2002 after I finished my active duty contract, that he had written this book. Get everyone you know to read this book, and especially anyone and everyone who comes of age to join the military and considers doing so must read this book.

Historia
In a world full to bursting with would-be heroes, Jim couldn't be less interested in saving the day. His fireballs fizzle. He's awfully grumpy. Plus, he's been dead for about sixty years. When a renegade necromancer wrenches him from eternal slumber and into a world gone terribly, bizarrely wrong, all Jim wants is to find a way to die properly, once and for all. On his side, he's got a few shambling corpses, an inept thief, and a powerful death wish. But he's up against tough odds....

Clever and entertaining
Revisado: 04-20-23
I enjoyed the premise of the story, and despite being one that seemed familiar, it stil managed to surprise me with shine of the twists.
The main character is oddly relatable, and in fact I'd say that to those who think the rule about making characters relatable doesn't make sense in fantasy, here's a prime example of how to do that. In one of the most ridiculously unrelatable scenarios a character could ever possibly find themselves in, Jim manages to be more relatable than most story protagonists.
I had read Yahtzee's Will Save The Galaxy books before I found this one, and his characterizations are great here just like in those. I do love it when an author has the guts to narrate their own audiobooks, as no one really knows those characters as deeply as they do.

Top quality in every respect
Revisado: 03-29-23
This is one of those presentations where I just don't even know where to start my praises. Neil Gaiman is in terrific form with his story crafting and telling, and how he transformed his graphic novels into audiobook form is another level of mastery. But on top of all that is the amazing cast of voice actors brought together for this production. Amazing!

Absolutely Fantastic!
Revisado: 02-24-23
A Dream to behold--truly fantastic in every sense of the word.
To say that Neil Gaiman is a master story-teller does not properly encompass this experience. He tells an intricate, thought-provoking and above all an eminently human tale. But beyond the artistry of his craft, when you listen to his audiobooks you can feel the love he bears his characters.
This love of story and character comes through most of all when he joins in to present the tale himself as narrator. I was spellbound from the first introduction as he coaxed every nuance of meaning and beauty from each individual word.

A solid story.
Revisado: 01-03-23
While not quite as polished as Brandon's later works, this book is very endearing. Give it the time to build and you will be glad you did. The beginning is a little slow burning, and the narrator likewise isn't great in the beginning but does build his characterizations as the story progresses.
By the 1/3 point the story and the characters are more and more interesting, and the narrator starts to portray them with more emotional quality. And from that point onward it snowballs into a grand and poignant exploration of society, morality and religion, and the triumph of essential human love for all humanity.

A fantastic Capstone to this series
Revisado: 12-03-22
I have loved every bit of the Mistborn series, both on its own and in its contribution to the cosmere extended universe as a whole. It brought both aspects of that to an amazing culmination.
Brandon Sanderson, you truly are one of the most talented storytellers of our time. And Michael Kramer, you keep doing a masterful job with your charismatic and empathetic portrayals of these characters.
