Science, art, unflinching determination and genius.
Revisado: 12-20-23
An amazing biographer tells the story of an amazing man leading the reader to feel present in the story. Unfortunately the narrator came off as an adolescent over exaggerating emphasis and emotion.
Nonetheless…a great listen

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

First of all, the best ending to a book I’ve ever read. Beautifully written with art and literature intertwined as the bones of a story of tragic life and the search for the meaning of existing.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared....

Historia
Twelve-year-old Elvis Babbitt has a head for the facts: she knows science proves yellow is the happiest color, she knows a healthy male giraffe weighs about 3,000 pounds, and she knows that the naked mole rat is the longest living rodent. She knows she should plan to grieve her mother, who has recently drowned while sleepwalking, for exactly 18 months. But there are things Elvis doesn't yet know—like how to keep her sister Lizzie from poisoning herself while sleep-eating or why her father has started wearing her mother's silk bathrobe around the house.

Historia
In the 18th and early 19th centuries, a Native American empire rose to dominate the fiercely contested lands of the American Southwest, the southern Great Plains, and northern Mexico. This powerful empire, built by the Comanche Indians, eclipsed its various European rivals in military prowess, political prestige, economic power, commercial reach, and cultural influence. Yet, until now, the Comanche empire has gone unrecognized in American history. This compelling and original book uncovers the lost story of the Comanches.

A comprehensive evaluation
Revisado: 02-28-18
I have to chuckle at the review of this book that read “The most boring book ever.” I am certain that for many this would be true. However I thoroughly enjoyed it. For sure it is a comprehensive study and evaluation of the Comanche nation dealing with the forces of nature, society and economy that drove the development, existence and failure of Comanche life. I learned so much more about Native American culture that other wonderful books don’t have time to delve into. I cannot give it five stars overall as it was difficult to hang with and needed to take it in stages. I have to wonder if it has been used as a textbook.

This is one of if not the best told history of native Americans I️ have read. The descriptions of Indian culture and comparison to white American culture is stunning. It is so well told I️ couldn’t stop reading. There were also interesting minor details I️ had not read about previously. If you are interested in Native American history, this is a must read.

I thought the story was very clever and very well developed. However the narrator's voice was too melodramatic. In fact I never got used to the sound of her voice. It really detracted from the experience.
