Historia
On a day that begins like any other, Hal receives a mysterious letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes very quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person - but also that the cold-reading skills she's honed as a tarot card reader might help her claim the money. Soon, Hal finds herself at the funeral of the deceased...where it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and the inheritance at the center of it. Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware's signature suspenseful style, an addictive thriller.

Compelling heroine and a well told story.
Revisado: 02-24-19
The ending to Ruth Ware books never surprise me, but the story and characters are so well constructed and told that I keep coming back to her books. This one is no different. I was so hooked I listened to it all in one weekend.

Historia
With the failure of Hadley's Hope, Weyland-Yutani has suffered a devastating setback - the loss of the Aliens they aggressively sought to exploit. Yet there's a reason the Company has risen to the top of the food chain. True to form, they have a redundancy already in place: the facility known as "The Cold Forge". Remote station RB-232 has become their greatest asset in weaponizing the Xenomorphs. However, when Dorian Sudler is sent to RB-232 to assess their progress, he discovers that there's a spy aboard - someone who doesn't necessarily act in the company's best interests.

Fan of Alien franchise but story is women-hating.
Revisado: 01-20-19
It's true that the human villain in this story is the masochist so the author (in theory) isn't asking you to root for him, but the level of brutality and disgust against women that the author attributes to this character goes beyond what I think was necessary and approaches a level that almost glorifies the villain. This character is a sociopath who will also kill the other male characters with ease, but never with the same brutality that he shows against women.
May contain spoilers.
If he met with a brutal end at the hands of our triumphant heroine then I could almost be swayed in favoror the story. In someways though, his end is almost a reward. The heroine isn't likeable, which is fine and by the end I still admired her tenacity.
I ended up fast forwarding chunks and managed to finish the book. In the end I would have preferred if the whole ship died along with the aliens.

Historia
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

I truly enjoyed the first book in this series, but the two main characters haven't evolved. The plots are interesting, but the main characters refuse to communicate with each other and its really frustrating. This may be a stupid point, but it completely takes me out of the story.

Historia
Area X has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine, Edenic landscape; all the members of the second expedition committed suicide; the third expedition died in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another; the members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within months of their return, all had died of aggressive cancer.

Interesting concept, but not well written.
Revisado: 03-04-18
(Note: May contain a small spoiler) I really wanted to enjoy this book and I do like the concept a lot, but I am not sure it was written well. It also doesn't help that the narrator is a bit monotoned throughout the story. I could see that both of these things might be intentional given the main character's personality , but I think it is a bit too rambling.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

This book is great for those who like stories about the "Human Endeavour", for science nerds, or those who want an excellently written thriller. I first heard about this book in a podcast years ago, couldn't track down a hard copy of it anywhere and was excited to see it finally pop up on audible.
The narrator does a great job of balancing the comedy and drama in this book.
Just plan entertaining.

Great Characters, Fantastic Writing
Revisado: 02-11-13
Though both are written well, I've enjoyed Todd's Bess Crawford mystery series more than the Inspector Ian Rutledge series. Both take place during or just after WWI, which is an absolutely fascinating time period. It's obvious that Todd has done quite a bit of historical research on the war, which certainly adds to each stories' atmosphere.
The plots might sometimes be a bit of a stretch, but they have enough truth and "believability" so that I've always really enjoyed them.
The characters are the best part. They are so well developed, they're the reason I've gone through the whole Crawford series. After I'd used my Audible credit on the first book and finished it, I instantly purchased the second book so that I wouldn't have to wait a whole month to see how each character's subplots progressed.
The narrator's voice sounds a bit too cold for me at times, but again, each character's personality is very strongly written so that towards the end I wasn't bothered by it.
I thoroughly recommend this book. If you want your characters a bit darker, I suggest the Rutledge series as well.
