Historia
From the Stone Age to the Greek Tragedies, from Shakespeare to Robin Hood, we have always had our heroes. The hero is at the centre of formative myths in every culture and persists to this day in world-conquering books, films and TV shows. But why do these characters continue to inspire us, and why are they so central to storytelling? Scalpel-sharp on the roots of storytelling and enlightening on the history and science of myth, The Hero is essential listening for anyone trying to write or understand fiction.

A unique analysis of storytelling—and the hero
Revisado: 02-03-21
In this long-form essay, narrator Jeff Harding does a great job reading Lee Child's / James Grant's book, The Hero. Child / Grant presents a unique analysis on the subject of storytelling via the concept of "the hero"—and it's many iterations through time and space. An interweaving of etymology, human evolution, and the role of narratives. Entertaining and educational. Recommended.

Historia
Art & Fear explores the way art gets made, the reasons it often doesn't get made, and the nature of the difficulties that cause so many artists to give up along the way. This is a book about what it feels like to sit in your studio or classroom, at your wheel or keyboard, easel or camera, trying to do the work you need to do. It is about committing your future to your own hands, placing free will above predestination, choice above chance. It is about finding your own work.

Historia
All fiction is character-driven, according to William Bernhardt, despite what you might have heard elsewhere. If your characters don’t interest readers, even the most exciting plots will fail. “Action is character,” Aristotle wrote, but what does that mean, and how can you use that fundamental principle to create dynamic fiction that will captivate readers? This audiobook explains the relationship between character and plot, and how the perfect melding of the two produces a mesmerizing story.

Revisado: 11-05-15
Mr. Bernhardt is an informed, well spoken individual with a sense of humor . I learned valuable lessons from this brief—but very informative—audiobook. I would recommend it for any level writer since the author is also a successful published author with many (selling) titles to his credit; credibility not many educators in the ivory towers of university can hold claim to.

I am able to listen to books while at my full-time day job. This title—written by the affable Mr. Bell, and narrated by the Mr. Basil—was a pleasure to listen to. I found myself bookmarking several parts of the book for later reference. Recommended listening for novices like myself. I would imagine that more advanced writers will benefit as well since Mr. Bell provides insights and tips into the craft, commitment, and art that has even more relevance now in the new age of digital publishing.

Historia
Set in rural southern Ohio and West Virginia, The Devil All the Time follows a cast of compelling and bizarre characters from the end of World War II to the 1960s. There’s Willard Russell, tormented veteran of the carnage in the South Pacific, who can’t save his beautiful wife, Charlotte, from an agonizing death by cancer no matter how much sacrificial blood he pours on his “prayer log.”

A well told, but disturbing tale about family, photos, church, and state.
Revisado: 10-11-15
This novel —which follows Donald Ray Pollock's jaw-dropping "Knockemstiff" —delivers a view of human existence that is disturbing, but truly lurking just below the surface of many human lives.
Brilliantly narrated by Mark Bramhall, I found myself having to take a break from the crushing existential desperation of Pollack's characters; but was glad that I returned to finish the remaining chapters.
There is a certain type of truth that Pollack paints, and it is dark. Some readers may not be able to see past the actions of Pollack's characters, and may miss the deeper layered messages and meanings he delivers with this first full length novel.
After listening to the audio book, I am also going to grab a print copy. In the meantime, I look forward to his next work.
