Too many regency romances rely on impediments and prolonged dithering by the protagonists. This one is mercifully free of the latter - our protagonists do have their misunderstandings and insecurities (it is after all a romance), but these two are braver and more willing to challenge each other than most while staying true to the period (manners and assumptions). Philly may be a "work of art" but she is rock solid in her character and she isn't afraid to speak her mind when necessary. And of course Alex Wyndham could breathe life into a phone book, so he keeps the romance vital and the narrative moving along easily.

Nope. No chemistry, no character development, story line badly plotted. Overall it felt totally unconvincing.

Step into the Pig and Thistle and begin your next romantic adventure in the Pennyroyal Green Series. Julie Anne Long writes with such affection for the town and its characters that you'll want to move in. Each book in the series is a stand alone romantic adventure, but it is best to read the series in order so you can learn more and more about the town and its denizens as well as the arc of a storyline about the Eversea/Redmond curse that runs through all the books. No one puts more heart into her romances than Julie Anne Long, giving us strong characters with loads of very compelling attraction. And this book has some laugh out loud moments as love plays havoc with formality and duty.

I have read this series in print twice, so I highly recommend it, and I can't wait for the next books to arrive to Audible!

This is the first book in Julie Anne Long's Pennyroyal Green Series. It begins the arc of a storyline about the Eversea and Redmond families' curse that carries through all 11.5 books in the series, while providing a searing and unique story of romance and adventure with each book. But read them in order because no one writes with quite as much heart as Julie Anne Long, and you don't want to miss anything as she reveals more and more about the small town of Pennyroyal Green, in Sussex, England. A town that you simply want to move into just to sit and watch the denizens drink and gossip at the Pig and Thistle and witness more and more of the machinations of the Everseas and the Redmonds. I've read this series in print, TWICE, and I'm so excited that it has come to Audible!

This is an entertaining book with plenty of detail from a journalistic insider. I very much enjoyed seeing the contrast between what the main character, Nichelle Clarke, learns from her interviews and what she ultimately writes for publication. The mystery of the crime-thriller itself is presented as a well-paced rollercoaster of information. Nichelle's sublimation of any sense of self-preservation to her ambition is sometimes a little hard to take, but she's strong and resourceful, and her ambition is counterbalanced by the drive to set things right as well as solve a puzzle, so she's an engaging character. I was pleased to find this is the first in a series. The side characters are well crafted and there is a build up of inter-office tension which will easily carry through more books.

Therese Plummer's range of voices and her timing in delivering dialog is extraordinary, she makes everyone come alive as a unique and interesting character. I would have readily given her five stars, but I have to admit listening to her perform these books (I've started the second in the series) exhausts me. I haven't tried another author that she's performed yet, but the samples from other authors, lead me to believe that this might be a consequence of these Walker books being fast-paced crime thrillers. But I find it overwhelming after awhile when every single phrase is delivered like a critical reveal, even when she's describing a location or talking about shoes and latte. This might not bother another listener, and the dialog saves the listening experience because she slows down and concentrates on the unique voice and the emotion behind each interaction. And she does that so well! (If you've ever seen His Girl Friday, the pacing in Plummer's performance reminds me of that - a sometimes frenetic barrage of detail and ideas all delivered at critical urgency. And we are after all, in a newsroom where deadlines loom.) Anyway, I'm looking forward to listening to more in the series, and I've ordered one of her other performances to see how it compares.

Arggghhh! I liked the first two of this series well enough. They do take patience because the characters have to think everything through a gazillion times, but I don't mind slow development in a Regency setting as long as it keeps moving forward. But I really can't stand repetitive dithering and misunderstandings that never seem to advance the relationship. This was the most repetitive book I've read in a long time. I couldn't care enough to finish it. I'll move onto the next and hope it is better.

Returning the book. I didn't realize it was abridged. I've never understood reading an abridged book.

I came to this series after listening to Hunter's new series about Soulwood, which I found compelling. As has been said by other reviewers: this one has way too much gun detail and not enough human interest. And I've always disliked reading stories in which otherwise strong women fall victim to the weakness and/or ambitions of men. These things have put me off the series, so I'm stopping with this one.

I found this book so engaging and entertaining in print, that I decided to listen to it in audio format. Martin Jarvis adds yet another layer of fun to the mayhem with his great voices and excellent timing. I've recommended the printed book to many of my friends, and now I'm recommending this one to audible members. I'm certain I will listen to it again someday.

I didn't like the primary character - there was no internal logic to her thinking. Hanna was supposed to be highly sensitive toward other people, but she was judgmental and preachy. She was supposed to be highly principled and very smart about long term consequences, and yet one future she envisioned for herself was so far beyond anything principled, it was ludicrous. And she dithered, covering the same ground over and over again. Krentz's characters rarely dither. There was plenty of snappy back and forth dialog between Hanna and Gideon, but it had no spark of warmth and no playfulness. It was a surprisingly passionless novel. Just dreary.

But Nellie Chalfant was excellent and did her best to breathe life into the characters. The only reason I finished the book was because of her performance. I will look to see what other books she's narrated.
