Historia
Douglas Murray, #1 international bestselling author and renowned cultural commentator, confronts arguably the most pressing question of our time: Why are Western supporters of Palestine unwittingly aligning with an evil empire? The campus left frames the violent hostilities as white colonialists committing genocide. Yet only a third of Israelis are Ashkenazi Jews of European ancestry. Murray argues that the conflict is not a simple tale of oppressor versus oppressed, but a clash between a thriving multi-racial democracy and a death cult bent on its destruction.

A book EVERYONE should experience.

As usual, Douglas Murray delivers a thoroughly researched and experienced account. A simultaneously heart-breaking and hopeful message contained within. Absolutely required reading for all; most especially those who find themselves protesting on behalf of murderous terrorists.

Historia
Ex-deniable operator Nick Stone has spent a lifetime in harm's way - but when someone he cares for very deeply is murdered in cold blood, he can no longer just take the pain. A high-level internecine conflict at the dark heart of the resurgent Russian Empire and an assassin's bullet on an isolated Alpine pass propel him from an apparently run-of-the-mill close-protection task into his most brutal and challenging mission yet. As the body count increases, Stone becomes one of Europe's most wanted.

It's starting to wear...
Revisado: 08-19-24
As per, the narrator is exceptional. He IS Nick Stone.
<SPOILERS AHEAD... kind of>
Detonator is a captivating, detailed and extremely enjoyable listen with just one exception... the constant loss. We all have to deal with loss of friends and family under various circumstances, and in this regard, given the brutality of Nick Stone's world, the Nick Stone series doesn't shy away from the unrelenting harshness of life. Perhaps this speaks to the author's own background. Fair one. However, as a listener, it's starting to wear. Call it escapism, but I wouldn't mind if Nick could hold onto a few people who anchor him in the good parts of life.

Love The Drinker, but hmmmm
Revisado: 01-20-23
Like many, I guess, I got Dark Harvest because I enjoy the hell out of Will Jordan's YT channel and his collaborations with people like MauLer. They have helped me considerably with my own writing. For that, I am incredibly grateful.
Unfortunately, Dark Harvest had some issues for me that really impacted my enjoyment of the story.
Good things first. I'll keep them generalized to avoid spoilers.
The premise and how it developed was original.
There were some really interesting interactions between characters that , at times, drew me into the story.
Some of the twists were unexpected, which added a lot of interest.
Now for the not so good.
Military and geopolitical elements. Some were small things like keys for Humvees. They don't have any for obvious tactical reasons.
Others were more egregious.
Firing an RPG 29 Vampir from a civilian helicopter while being loaded up with people (or at all). Sure, it's a one man operated unit, but it's unwieldy as hell inside a helicopter, and the backblast generated as that type of rocket expends it entire fuel load before exiting the launcher would kill or seriously injure those behind it when fired in such a scenario. Not to mention, a single thermobaric rocket would absolutely not take down a building of the size and construction portrayed.
C4 explosive is super stable. A bullet impact would not cause a detonation. Anyone using it and claiming to know a lot about weapons would undoubtedly be aware of this.
Military personnel just crossing over a sovereign state's borders in armed military assets without authorization or invitation is akin to an invasion and would certainly not result in that country's civil and military forces operating under the command of a small band of US soldiers of low significance, a contractor and some doctor from the WHO. They would be arrested and the US govt would be immediately contacted through diplomatic channels or authorized military personnel in country, and the sky would fall on the heads of what are essentially freelancers. Which brings me to the bioweapon situation. Why was Becker and gang simply allowed to deal with this kind of threat? Were they the best for the job? I would argue, no. Infinitely better trained and resourced elements would be spun up to tackle such an existential threat. The USAMRIID, but one such example.
How did the WHO have the ability to pull rank on the US/Turkish military when it comes to bioterrorism?
why didn't the sniper take the shot when her quarry were standing on an exposed roof top?
Why would an illegal super secret facility, cultivating a bioweapon, have a distress alarm built in in case of an incursion?
Why can an O2 bottle have its nozzle broken off in a single strike (or even multiple strikes) by a slightly built woman wielding a computer hard drive?
There are many more holes that had me at a loss, but this review is turning into an essay. However, there were enough of these holes to pull me out of the story time and time again. A story set in the real world and utilizing military and governmental agencies needs thorough research to sell its authenticity. Dark Harvest lacked this in a big and baffling way.
Last point. The narrator. Overall, pretty good. However, the female voices sounded whiney and irritating, and Becker always spoke like he was trying to be cool AF.
I struggled to finish this book, and by the end, I didn't really care what happened to any of the characters.
Having said all of that, I respect The Drinker and his ruthless critiques. I only wish Dark Harvest had followed some of his own rules.

Historia
Profanity has always been a deliciously vibrant part of our lexicon, an integral part of being human. In fact, our ability to curse comes from a different part of the brain than other parts of speech - the urgency with which we say "f--k!" is instead related to the instinct that tells us to flee from danger. Language evolves with time, and so does what we consider profane or unspeakable. Nine Nasty Words is a rollicking examination of profanity, explored from every angle: historical, sociological, political, linguistic.

It is also a vivid demonstration of the magic a gifted narrator can weave on whatever they turn their skills on.
It was a struggle to finish despite the aforementioned gems.
