leveled up
Revisado: 10-04-24
It's been awhile since I enjoyed JD Kirk's books for more than the character exchanges. The mysteries have always been good, but I recognize the pattern and to usually figure things out. not all aspects, but enough. none of that ever mattered because the characters are so incredibly engaging and dynamic with their interactions. It's like catching up with old friends.
this book leveled up the mystery side for sure. I could still kind of guess who the villain was, but I was second-guessing myself throughout the whole book because it didn't make sense until the very end. there was so much seemingly misdirection and twists in the mystery plot. I was delighted. looking forward to the 20th book

outdated love stories
Revisado: 04-21-24
The mysteries in each novel were excellent.
The dialogue between the characters as they considered all their options brilliant.
The addition of actual historical events being placed in this fiction wonderful.
I understand that the English nobility used to regard women as these delicate creatures that constantly needed rescuing and couldn't have an intelligent thought to save their life.
However, I I disagree with the choices written for Lydia's character to move the plot along. She's written as such, a daft idiot. My suspension of belief was thwarted every time the female heroine made another stupid decision.

Historia
Timothy Walter Bolton - better known as Timmy - has spent most of his life as a necromancer. When he isn't terrorising his enemies, he's plotting inside his castle, which is built on top of lightless chasms filled with nameless horrors and beings of a generally malevolent and megalomaniacal nature. But after one of his latest creations, a zombie hydra-dragon-bear, tries to eat him, he decides that maybe it's time to find a new, less dangerous, career.

Historia
In the town of Night Vale, there’s a faceless old woman who secretly lives in everyone’s home, but no one knows how she got there or where she came from...until now. Told in a series of eerie flashbacks, the story of The Faceless Old Woman goes back centuries to reveal an initially blissful and then tragic childhood on a Mediterranean Estate in the early 19th century, her rise in the criminal underworld of Europe, a nautical adventure with a mysterious organization of smugglers, her plot for revenge on the ones who betrayed her, and ultimately her death and its aftermath.

honestly super enjoy the surprising magical journey. there were hints and elements reminding me of authentic pagan practices, which was a lovely bonus to hear. I hope that this is the start to a a series as I'm quite curious with the future holds for the protagonist.

I loved this series, but I do feel like the third book had an excessive amount of anxiety and fear-based decisions happen within the characters to move the plot along.

Historia
Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city - a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent - but he's one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music.

early on I thought this storyline was headed towards a Romeo and Juliet type of scene with just different background. I was very very pleasantly surprised. it's still a coming-of-age for both characters. once again Victoria schwabs writing and dialogue and the way the characters process their own growth is just fucking beautiful.

While they wait for the all-clear, four strangers, who'd happened to sit at the same table, pass the time in conversation, and friendships are struck. she's not that dumb
Revisado: 07-18-22
these books are like a comfortable can of chicken noodle soup on a cold day. however you could get better soup at a nicer restaurant. there are still too many times that the lead heroin asks questions that she's far too intelligent to not know the answer to. or she asks questions about things that have already been clarified for her in previous books. please stop making her that dumb lol. or that forgetful.
