Plunged into this swirling underworld of beautiful women, fast cash, ungodly hours, and strangers’ secrets, Baby’s grip on reality begins to loosen. Surprising!
Revisado: 03-13-25
Subject matter was treated with deep regard for the mix of trauma and delight it brings to people. I loved it! Exposed our cultural flaws while weaving a tale with empathy.

Here is Cheryl, a tightly-wound, vulnerable woman who lives alone, with a perpetual lump in her throat. She is haunted by a baby boy she met when she was six, who sometimes recurs as other people's babies. Cheryl is also obsessed with Phillip, a philandering board member at the women's self-defense nonprofit where she works. She believes they've been making love for many lifetimes, though they have yet to consummate in this one.

Not “Normal”
Revisado: 05-23-24
Thank the gods someone at Simon &etc had the insight to step out of formula. Such a relief to get list in the world of high-functioning complete abnormality thus exposing so much about normality and wrapped like a spinal cord in a human being having a life story both absurd and believable. I want to read it again (but it has to be for the first time. )

Startling, unusual, and yet irresistably readable, Among Others is at once the compelling story of a young woman struggling to escape a troubled childhood, a brilliant diary of first encounters with the great novels of modern fantasy and SF, and a spellbinding tale of escape from ancient enchantment.

Unusual…good!
Revisado: 05-21-23
This audio book was captivating entertaining and well-produced. I’ve no exposure to modern Welsh culture …and the narrator has or uses a pronounced accent that is odd, but also easy enough to listen through.
I felt it was sticking to its territory in a self-aware way, but it’s written as a memoir of a teen who is a ravenous sci-fi fan as well as being of a unique, atypical background. Thus it’s not overbearingly self-aware but rather it’s quite believably so.

Historia
In a world renowned even within a galaxy full of wonders, a crime within a war. For one man it means a desperate flight, and a search for the one - maybe two - people who could clear his name. For his brother it means a life lived under constant threat of treachery and murder. And for their sister, even without knowing the full truth, it means returning to a place she'd thought abandoned forever.

I’m returning this book because I can’t handle another 30 seconds of this PONDEROUS INTONEMENT!!!!
Every sentence sounds like the last one in a serial chapter.
Sheesh. Let the author’s words do the job, my brother.

Historia
At first, Logan Ramsay isn’t sure if anything’s different. He just feels a little . . . sharper. Better able to concentrate. Better at multitasking. Reading a bit faster, memorizing better, needing less sleep. But before long, he can’t deny it: Something’s happening to his brain. To his body. He’s starting to see the world, and those around him—even those he loves most—in whole new ways. The truth is, Logan’s genome has been hacked. And there’s a reason he’s been targeted for this upgrade.

Historia
The Rangers and Osay colonists have won the fight for control of their corner of Amir. But as the threat of invasion from nearby RUPAC special forces loom, Reach, Alexa, and Brody seek to make newfound neighbors into allies. But friendship isn’t easy to come by, even on a planet as hostile to humans as Amir. Even inside the Ranger-protected confines of the O-C, tensions boil over as Liana works to find a way to make Ranger, Osay, and RUPAC defectors coexist and save their hostility for what lays outside the colony’s growing walls.

It is What it Is
Revisado: 07-22-22
I am a big fan of great literature. This is not that. But remember, Chas Dickens’s novels of suffering, live , and humanity in Bleak London were serial pulp publications…
I’ve listened all of the Wayward Galaxy so far from beginning to bloopers. Give it a whirl. You’ll know right away if this is the kind of stuff you live, hate, hate to live, or love to hate.

Historia
Charlie Hall has never found a lock she couldn’t pick, a book she couldn’t steal, or a bad decision she wouldn’t make. She's spent half her life working for gloamists, magicians who manipulate shadows to peer into locked rooms, strangle people in their beds, or worse. Gloamists guard their secrets greedily, creating an underground economy of grimoires. And to rob their fellow magicians, they need Charlie Hall.

It’s chapter 4 and I’m still getting a premise lesson from the narrator. (Yawn) No doubt when the story actually starts to unfold there will be something pithy, but I can’t wait around any longer, I’m bailing out and returning the book.

The story is at once entertaining, suspenseful, allegorical, character-driven, flipped and relevant. The performance is stellar snd seamless. I loved it. I was not ready to like this book as much as I did. Every character as endearing and infuriating as only looking in the mirror can be. Brava!

The Light Brigade: it’s what soldiers fighting the war against Mars call the ones who come back...different. Grunts in the corporate corps get busted down into light to travel to and from interplanetary battlefronts. Everyone is changed by what the corps must do in order to break them down into light. Those who survive learn to stick to the mission brief - no matter what actually happens during combat. Dietz, a fresh recruit in the infantry, begins to experience combat drops that don’t sync up with the platoon’s.

For anyone contemplating Ayn Rand, Karl Marx, Donald Trump, Churchill, Hitler, Eisenhower, Lula, and thinking about 21st century economics and politics. Especially if you like a good Star Trek or Heinlein space opera...
Well told, well read.
