Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

How refreshing..
Revisado: 03-12-23
Before leaving this review, I looked through a few reviews expecting everyone to love Lessons as much as I did. I was truly shocked to read reviews that used words like boring and returned. To each his own, maybe in the world we live in there has to be more action, sex, and violence - or maybe I am just boring, I loved the storyline, the narration, everything! At some point I realized how far we have come and yet how far we have left to go. A woman who unapologetically stands up for herself and other women and refuses to dummy down is a rare find in books these days - how refreshing!

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Great character building, beautiful storyline. It was a great recommendation, and would definitely recommend (and already have before finishing!) to others.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Historia
When Park Ranger Anna Pigeon answers a call to historic Mt. Locust, once a producing plantation and inn on Mississippi's Natchez Trace Parkway, the last thing she expects to encounter is a naked and very dead man. His body bears what looks like the brutal scars of an S&M ritual gone terribly wrong. When the deceased turned out to be the brother of a candidate for the office of local sheriff, a host of cover-ups, hidden agendas, old allegiances, and buried secrets begins to emerge.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 09-01-21
I loved Anna’s character, and enjoyed the story very much!! The only qualm I had (and it’s a personal petty peeve) - I could hear the reader moving her tongue in her mouth before starting after pauses and between characters, almost like her mouth was dry. For some reason I picked it up so much it irked me at times 🤷🏻♀️

Very enlightening and well produced
Revisado: 03-18-21
This podcast was very informative, eye opening, and inspiring. It is heartbreaking to hear of the biases in the medical field, and that it goes far beyond what I’d previously been aware of. I am not a medical professional, nor a person of color. However, I do work on the outskirts of medical care and patient support, and will take this knowledge to help encourage the patients I encounter that are of color to educate themselves, and advocate to be heard, for their care and treatment. Thank you for this production, and education!!

Historia
Two words: the bullet. That's all it takes to shatter her life. Caroline Cashion is beautiful, intelligent, a professor of French literature. But in a split second, everything she's known is proved to be a lie. A single bullet, gracefully tapered at one end, is found lodged at the base of her skull. Caroline is stunned. It makes no sense: She has never been shot. She has no entry wound, no scar. Then, over the course of one awful evening, she learns the truth.

Revisado: 09-19-20
The first 1/4 of this book was almost painful. It just seemed as though there wasn’t going to be any depth to the story. I’m glad I didn’t give up.. It ended up being a pretty good listen!

Historia
On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge.

Things aren't always how they seem...
Revisado: 08-13-12
I absolutely LOVED this book! I simply could not wait to listen and found excuses to "put my ears in". There were a few slow moments and a few times I said out loud "yeah, right!" as if something like that would really happen, but more often than not it was an amazing ride (and I mean RIDE). I find nothing better in a book than being totally absolutely shocked by the characters and once this happened in Gone Girl Gone I was hooked! It really is true that you never know what happens behind closed doors (or crazy minds!). I must admit I was a bit disappointed by the ending but also hopeful that there could possibly, maybe be a sequel where everyone gets what they deserve.

Intense!!!
Revisado: 08-13-12
I always look forward to Karin Slaughter books and this was no exception. I was so excited to listen to this one I basically walked around my house for 2 days listening (to the chagrin of my husband!). The one thing people need to understand about Slaughter's books is that they aren't a nice quiet evening read while drinking a mint julep on the porch....you tend to get way involved and her books are INTENSE! There were several story lines in this book beside the Will/Sara story and each one stood well on its own, regardless of how disturbing they were. This story spans 40 years so if you are a person who dislikes back and forth writing - this isn't for you. I personally enjoyed learning more about the past and watching it weaved brilliantly into the present. We learned more about Will Trent's troubled background and what brought him to the GBI. I was surprised but appreciated the honesty regarding the police view on women in the 1970's. She did not hold back on that subject. Many reviewers tend to explain the book and characters in detail so I won't do that. My thoughts - if you want an intense, sometimes cringeworthy thriller with abuse, racism, sexism, childhood pain and adult reality this is a GREAT read!

Historia
Patty and Walter Berglund were the new pioneers of old St. Paul - the gentrifiers, the hands-on parents, the Whole Foods generation. Patty was the ideal sort of neighbor, who could tell you where to recycle your batteries and how to get the local cops to do their job. She was an enviably perfect mother and the wife of Walter's dreams. Together with Walter - environmental lawyer, commuter cyclist, total family man - she was doing her small part to build a better world.

Refreshing bit of reality
Revisado: 11-13-10
I absolutely loved this book and hated for it to end. Franzen did a brilliant job of weaving the evolution of characters in and out of periods of strength, selfishness, weakness and home again. No, I didn't like all of the characters, but isn't that the way real life is? There is nothing better than starting a novel disliking a character and in the end loving them and respecting the road they traveled and not judging them for it. The only reason for 4 stars is that the voice of the Indian character voice was truly grating. Other than that an easy 5 stars.
