I listened to this memoir as an audiobook. Kudos to the narrator, Karen Peakes, for being able to narrate this horrific true story of Michelle "Shelly" Knotek and the abuse she inflicted on her daughters, husbands, friends and family. This story is horrifying and infuriating. A true story of abuse and secrets.
The fact that children and adults are abused and are afraid to tell is so sad and will continue to upset me. This is not just true in this story but in many people out there among us.

Warning: This book contains a lot of physical, psychological, and emotional abuse.

Also, if you look up Shelly Knotek as I did while I was reading this book, you will learn she is no longer in jail. This insane abuser is allowed to live free in this world, and that absolutely baffles me after the crimes she committed.

Keefe keeps you hooked from the beginning. Empire of Pain is harrowing, disgusting, and reprehensible. I'm sure I have more adjectives to describe the Sackler family, but that will work for my review. The Sackler family stopped at nothing in pursuit of wealth and status. From Valium to oxycontin, they continued to ruin lives for over 70 years. They hoodwinked the medical community and destroyed millions of lives. Capitalism at its worst.

Keefe comprehensively dives into the Sackler family and their "legacy," which we will all live with for a long time.

If you love anyone who is an addict or a recovering addict, this book will make you so angry.

If only the wealthy put their money to good use, such as the ongoing mental health crisis.

It doesn't matter if you have no money in your pocket and are homeless or if you're famous and live in a mansion ~ addiction is addiction. If you haven't loved anyone who is an addict or was an addict it may be hard for you to understand, but it's true.
Matthew Perry never felt he was good enough and all the alcohol and drugs could not fill the void.
" Reality is an acquired taste."
Most people who are addicts are trying to escape reality and take away their pain.

Matthew Perry, someone you care about, a stranger on the street ~ they are just trying to make the pain go away.

All I know as I listened to this audibook is this, I could have closed my eyes and heard anyone I've cared about tell me why they used/drank or are using/drinking. The people and places change but the struggle is the same and very real. ❤️

These Silent Woods by Kimi Cunnigham Grant.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I listened to this book ~ The narration for this book was terrific. Bronson Pinchot, Stephanie Willis. Bronson Pinchot is the main narrator, and his tempo and inflection keep me easily hooked. Although the book was a slow start, I easily became pulled in and caring about the characters in the book. Very well done.

Red Notice, by Bill Browder, is a powerful read and gives us a glimpse into understanding the Russian oligarchy and the power of money to corrupt. It is a true story of his life.

Bill Browder becomes an activist quite by accident.
From Wall Street to Russia.
Along the way, he exposed corruption, and when he did, he barely escaped with his life. He saw the murderous heart of the Putin regime and has spent the last half decade on a campaign to expose it. Browder succeed in having a law passed in the United States--The Magnitsky Act--that punishes a list of Russians implicated in his lawyer's murder. Red Notice is the story of one man, who, against all odds, was able to change the world and find meaning in his life.

If you've ever loved someone who has lost their life to addiction, lives in addiction or has overcome addiction ~ this book will give you a glimpse into how it can happen.

Kingsolver is a masterful writer and has the ability to capture the rabbit hole of addiction like no one I ever have ever read.

At times, it's hard to read, but much like real life, you are rooting for the people you love to overcome their addiction.

Thank you Marc Palmieri for sharing your story and your daughter's story.
I highly recommend this book, especially if you love books about people who overcome adversity.

My review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I will say I might be a bit biased since I personally know the author. That said, this book was gut wrenching. How many people do you know who are willing to share their raw, authentic story with the world? I am not a parent but I cannot imagine how difficult it must be to watch one's daughter suffer with epilepsy. It is not something, one can but a band-aid on. As Marc and his family traversed this unfamiliar territory we see a range of emotions. He shows us how important is to have a strong support system. He also shows us the imperfections of being a parent, not always getting it right and being scared and a range of so many emotions. With humor and wit, we get to see the journey through Marc's lense. Wonderfully written and beautifully raw. Thank you Marc for sharing your story and your family's story as you traveled the road of epilepsy with your daughter.
