Poignant masterpiece!

This is one of those books that you feel sad to finish...it was one of the best stories and performances I've heard in a long time. The author had a phenomenal way with the English language and it never sounded stilted or unrealistic. George Guidall is my favorite narrator ever and handles humor and tragedy equally beautifully. I can't recommend this book enough, especially if you've already listened to Dances With Wolves. A highly gratifying experience.

Not as suspenseful as I like

Martin Jarvis did his usual outstanding performance, but the story was rather bland in my opinion. Even the moment of danger fell flat. Also, I wish that characters would enjoy getting to know one another and gradually falling in love rather than jumping into bed immediately. Honestly the girl he gets together with throws up red flags right away (getting drunk, throwing a fit when he can't tell her confidential things, wanting sex immediately) and the only thing they had going was a rabid sexual appetite. I don't know if I'll listen to anymore of Felix's novels. They are getting a bit too formulaic.

Great book but very low volume recording

Fascinating while not overly gruesome

Highly interesting and detailed while giving a well-rounded introduction to many different areas of forensics. I will definitely look for more of her books.

While no one can deny that the narrator is incredibly talented, the intensity of the accents, often times coming seemingly out of nowhere, were distracting, sometimes annoying.

Crichton's books are so much more in depth, creative, and educational than the movie adaptations. This is an exciting narrative you just don't want to end! I'm sure I'll listen to it again.

Interesting listen

For the most part I enjoyed this book. It's obvious a lot of research went into it. It seemed to me however that instead of a book presenting the facts, it's very much the writer's opinion of the facts. For instance, while I also disagree with anti-vaccinators, the author railed against them several times, pretty much calling them stupid morons. The book also seemed to lack consistency, some chapters going into depth about the disease under discussion, while others, such as the one on leprosy, just waxed enthusiastic on how awesome a guy Damien was. Additionally, while I enjoy humor and snark in a science book, the author seemed to be trying too hard to be funny. Some of the hypothetical conversations were overboard.
I think some judicious editing would have made the book smoother and more respectful of others' opinions and beliefs, even if the author herself doesn't agree with them.
The narrator did a passable job, but the tone of voice she used when quoting men was a bit grating.

Yes, the audio version gave real life to the various characters.

Would you be willing to try another book from Dick Francis? Why or why not?

Yes, classic Dick Francis can't be beat!

You could; I broke it up because of circumstances.

Simon Prebble did a great job! The plot was tamer than usual but made up for it with the tender relationships the protagonist has with his children.

Stilted narration

Very flat and broken narration made a decent story rough to listen to. I enjoy Bill Crider's stories but am used to the animated narration of George Guidell. I will probably listen to the rest of this series but hope the narration improves.
