Historia
Even as a girl Morgan has always been wild, like the seas which batter the cliffs beneath her home, Tintagel Castle. But she has always been safe, too. Then one day her father is called away to a war from which he does not return. In his place comes the High King, Uther Pendragon, with the sorcerer Merlin lurking in his wake. Uther claims Morgan’s mother, the Lady Igraine as his queen.

Really enjoyable fantasy that just… ends?
Revisado: 01-29-23
I really enjoyed this as a light fantasy listen with more depth than I anticipated with a free download for the month. I found myself really getting invested in the characters as the plot lines started to build momentum and converge and then… it ended. And the closing lines were something akin to “this isn’t the end, I’m just getting started” so, I’m assuming there’s a next volume in the works but still, a very abrupt stop that felt really tonally dissonant from the rest of the experience.

Historia
Lispector’s most shocking novel. The Passion According to G.H., Clarice Lispector’s mystical novel of 1964, concerns a well-to-do Rio sculptress, G.H., who enters her maid’s room, sees a cockroach crawling out of the wardrobe, and, panicking, slams the door - crushing the cockroach - and then watches it die. At the end of the novel, at the height of a spiritual crisis, comes the most famous and most genuinely shocking scene in Brazilian literature....

I love Lispector but
Revisado: 01-29-23
The narration made this actually unbearable. Honestly, I’ve only got an hour and change left and I just can’t do it anymore. It’s halting and detached from the cadence of the writing and has left me completely void of any care about the story itself and unable to follow the actually beautifully written prose. Really, really a bummer waste of a credit.

Historia
When a banished witch falls in love with the legendary trickster Loki, she risks the wrath of the gods in this moving, subversive debut novel that reimagines Norse mythology. Angrboda’s story begins where most witches' tales end: with a burning. A punishment from Odin for refusing to provide him with knowledge of the future, the fire leaves Angrboda injured and powerless, and she flees into the farthest reaches of a remote forest. There she is found by a man who reveals himself to be Loki, and her initial distrust of him transforms into a deep and abiding love.

Not the retelling for me
Revisado: 05-23-22
I have to say I found the pace and tone of this retelling to be lacking. The story lagged and lost me many times, and while the narration was certainly GOOD, I don’t think the characters matched with the voices given to them at all. Kept hanging in here hoping things would shift and they… never did. Disappointing.

Historia
In 1965, the US government helped the Indonesian military kill approximately one million innocent civilians. This was one of the most important turning points of the 20th century, eliminating the largest communist party outside China and the Soviet Union and inspiring copycat terror programs in faraway countries like Brazil and Chile. But these events remain widely overlooked, precisely because the CIA's secret interventions were so successful.
