Historia
In 1848, a year of international democratic revolt, a young, enslaved couple, Ellen and William Craft, achieved one of the boldest feats of self-emancipation in American history. Posing as master and slave, while sustained by their love as husband and wife, they made their escape together across more than 1,000 miles, riding out in the open on steamboats, carriages, and trains that took them from bondage in Georgia to the free states of the North.

Gripping from start to finish
Revisado: 12-31-23
There are few books I have listened to that so completely held my attention as this gripping true narrative of Ellen's and William's flight from slavery in Georgia to New England and beyond.
The scale of injustice they faced throughout their lives was heart-rending. And yet they kept going, striving, and working to help others. The strength of this book is that it places their personal struggles squarely in the context of the abolition movement, the political compromise that led to the Fugitive Slave Act and its contribution to eventual civil war.
I highly recommend this audible book which tells the documented story, the history, the background dynamics and the eventual trajectory of one enslaved couple and their family.

You make hundreds of decisions every day, from what to eat for breakfast to how you should invest, and not one of them could be made without the essential component of emotion. It has long been held that thinking and feeling are separate and opposing forces in our behavior. But as Leonard Mlodinow, the best-selling author of Subliminal, tells us, extraordinary advances in psychology and neuroscience have proven that emotions are as critical to our well-being as is rational thinking.

Historia
Poet Ocean Vuong’s debut novel is a shattering portrait of a family, a first love, and the redemptive power of storytelling. On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late 20s, the letter unearths a family’s history that began before he was born - a history whose epicenter is rooted in Vietnam - and serves as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation.

The Sadness of Life
Revisado: 01-25-20
This is a gorgeously written novel that reads like poetry. Certain images and phrases will stay with me -- the Vietnamese women miming their request for oxtail for their soup, the trips to the mall, "I am sorry" as a mantra of the subservient.
If anyone wants to know what it feels, looks, and smells like to grow up Asian, poor, and gay in a certain time and a certain place, this book will transport you and break you open.

One person talks; the other listens. It's so basic that we take it for granted. Unfortunately, most of us think of ourselves as better listeners than we actually are. Why do we so often fail to connect when speaking with family members, romantic partners, colleagues, or friends? How do emotional reactions get in the way of real communication? This thoughtful, witty, and empathic book has already helped over 100,000 people break through conflicts and transform their personal and professional relationships.

Wisdom for a Lifetime
Revisado: 01-03-20
This is a quiet book about a quiet subject, yet it is revolutionary in a positive way. He talks about what is seldom said or discussed-- do you really listen and are you really heard, what does that mean, and how do you do it. Dr. Nichols insights and humor are developed from a long life of observation of people from his psychology practice, teaching roles, and personal life.
While the topic is listening, he spends equal time on how to speak up effectively and what it means to be heard.
This is a book I will return to throughout my life.

Historia
In his highly anticipated second novel, Family Life, he delivers a story of astonishing intensity and emotional precision. We meet the Mishra family in Delhi in 1978, where eight-year-old Ajay and his older brother Birju play cricket in the streets, waiting for the day when their plane tickets will arrive and they and their mother can fly across the world and join their father in America. America to the Mishras is, indeed, everything they could have imagined and more: When automatic glass doors open before them, they feel that surely they must have been mistaken for somebody important.

Concise and Searing
Revisado: 05-16-18
This is one of the best novels I have read in years. I totally entered the world of the young narrator. Seen through the eyes of a child, our assumptions about what to do and what is right in such a difficult situation are subtly challenged. Basically a family struggles along and each member does their best to survive and connect with the others, although that part is often frayed. I listened to this while going through a difficult time. Oddly, this book made me feel less alone.
The narration is excellent.
