Good story read well by author
Revisado: 02-12-17
I enjoyed the "figuring out" of events. Overall good story where I became invested in the characters.
Didn't realize it was read by the author. Wasn't sure how that would go, but she did a good job. Decent voice changes to easily follow who was speaking.
My only disappointment was that we didn't get to hear Big give Lawrence the "big news".
Wanted to hear more of Big's story.
Overall, very enjoyable! A credit well spent.

Historia
It was whispered all through London society that he was a murderer, that he'd spent his youth in an asylum and was not to be trusted - especially with a lady. Any woman caught in his presence was immediately ruined. Yet Beth found herself inexorably drawn to the Scottish lord whose hint of a brogue wrapped around her like silk and whose touch could draw her into a world of ecstasy.

a romance about someone with aspergers syndrome
Revisado: 02-05-16
An unusual story about a man with aspergers who didn't think he could fall in love.
I don't think I'm giving anything away by saying he finally found that he could love. This was a romance and mystery; and while I thought some of the plot was contrived, overall I enjoyed learning about the mystery and seeing it resolved.
The narrator wasn't the best. it kept pulling me away from the story, as I tried to figure out how it might be read by someone else. Most of the Mackenzie men had the same voice, and at times it was hard determining who was speaking. The inflections were strange as well. A character could scream for help, say "damn you" and 'hello" and it would be pretty much the same inflection for all.
Overall though, I enjoyed the story, itself. I liked the romance, the sex, the characters.

Historia
Jamie Fraser knows from his time-traveling wife Claire that, no matter how unlikely it seems, America will win the Revolutionary War. But that truth offers little solace, since Jamie realizes he might find himself pointing a weapon directly at his own son - a young officer in the British army. And Jamie isn't the only one with a tormented soul - for Claire may know who wins the conflict, but she certainly doesn't know whether or not her beloved Jamie survives.

Ms. Gabaldon left us hanging for a change!
Revisado: 12-02-15
I've spent the summer listening to all 8 books. At approximately 45 hours per book, that's 400 hours with characters who have become like old friends!
The stories are great, sometimes a little more battle history than I need to hear, but still love the books.
It's unusual to get to know characters in a romance as they grow old together. I have enjoyed seeing Claire and Jaime fall deeper in love over time.
The big question is... When will we get the next installment of the story? I guess it's better to know there is more coming, than to think the story is over! Can't wait!!!!

For 20 years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. But now she is returning with her grown daughter to Scotland's majestic mist-shrouded hills. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones...about a love that transcends the boundaries of time...and about James Fraser, a Scottish warrior whose gallantry once drew a young Claire from the security of her century to the dangers of his....

Now I'm hooked!
Revisado: 07-05-15
I listened to Outlander and enjoyed it, but didn't think I'd be able to listen to more of the books. But, since Starz came out with the series, I'm hooked! I had to hear more of what happened to Jamie and Claire. Davina Porter is excellent, as usual. Though I think she had a little bit of a hard time giving an American accent to one character, when she also had an English and Scottish accent to handle at the same time. But I don't care! Quite a good story. The time-travel aspect gets a little confusing at times. But still, it's a great love story, and you get to learn about the history of Scotland and England while you're listening. I knew of the Jacobite times, but never really understood what it was all about. Now I know.
Anyway -- I enjoyed listening to this second book, and am now in the process of downloading the third book in the series!

One of the best-known stories in American culture, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has stirred the imagination of young and old alike for over 100 years. Best Actress nominee Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married, Alice In Wonderland), fresh from filming The Dark Knight Rises, lent her voice to this uniquely American fairy tale.

An unexpected treat
Revisado: 04-17-15
I've seen the movie, of course, but never read the book. The story was fun. Quite different from the movie. As an adult, I could see places in the story where I'd think, "why didn't they just...." But then, there'd be no story! Anne Hathaway was excellent! All the voices she came up with! She made this a very fun listen.

Enjoyed the continued story. It's easy to get caught up in the lives of the thunder point residents. Carr does a good job of creating characters you can relate to; and Therese Plummer is an excellent narrator. Next up for me--"the hero" the next in the series!

Historia
Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning epic The Grapes of Wrath remains his undisputed masterpiece. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of Tom Joad and his family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel west in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires, and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human, yet majestic in its scale and moral vision.

Excellent, but not if you're already depressed!
Revisado: 03-18-15
Steinbeck knows how to draw a picture with words. I could feel the despair of the migrant workers. It's all so sad. And it will hopefully give people a better understanding of the migrant workers (illegal aliens) if today.
The narrator was excellent. I googled him and recognized him. It gave me a new respect for the actor, Dylan Baker. He had a voice for each character, male and female; and I would swear that Henry Fonda was reading the Tom Jode part! Baker was that good!
I highly recommend this book. I like Steinbeck, and now I'll also put Dylan baker-narrated books on my must-listen list!

horrible narration!
Revisado: 12-02-14
I agree with a previous reviewer. What kind of Scottish accent is this? It sounds like Dracula moved to Scotland! The previous books were great! As the books are set in Scotland, you'd think the ability to do the accent would be a priority!
I can't review the story because I had to stop listening. I simply couldn't take hearing Ms. Angel read Nate's lines. I love this series. What a shame that I have to skip olivia's story.
