Light, entertaining postapocalypic urban fantasy

This is your cup of tea or it isn't. I'm not normally a fan of postapocalyptic or fantasy genres, but this one delivers with imagination and a touch of understated dry humor, narrated perfectly. Battle bots, alien bug wars, mc warriors, and... cats. It's hard not to like a badass heroine who just does what needs doing, without self-pity, when the world is crumbling. For more attentive readers, there's some amazing character development in the background that tugs on the heartstrings.

"Hero“ is a smirky, entitled creep

Couldn't get into this book. Hero disrespects heroine at every turn and figures he's so charming and attractive he can do anything. She might just be that easy despite knowing better.

Really suspenseful but the FBI guy had NO EXCUSE for his extreme and destructive tactics. Kept waiting for him to get his comeuppance and instead he gets praised by the people he victimized. What is wrong with this author?!!

Stupidity moves the plot along....

Scheming aupervillains. Heroines whose stubborn "independence" preempts common sense. Hot, easily distracted alpha male protectors always playing catchup. If you can handle foolish protagonists, it's a great value.

The gruesome death of a promising series.

The first two books were fun, clever, and well-written. In this installment, the whole cast of strong, likeable characters turn inexplicably stupid and ineffective. I liked the first two books enough to hang on through the chapters-long descent into hopelessness and horror, and finally gave up. Wish I'd given up several hours sooner.

Top-tier Grisham

Good story, almost unendurable narration

The plot was interesting enough to keep me listening despite a narration that manages to make the simplest conversation sound unnatural and even nonsensical. I initially thought the book was poorly edited, but soon realized it was garbled in narration. So yeah--kudos to the author for keeping me interested despite a performance that is as close to nails on chalkboard as I've heard. I would have enjoyed this book a lot more if I'd had the option of switching to print.
