Surviving the last two books to get to this one was worth it.

After the last two installments in the series I wasn’t overly optimistic I would like this, but with ensemble voice acting gone (thank you from the bottom of my soul for that) and back to just TGR reading, along with a story line that doesn’t just make me want to throw my phone while listening - I’m cranked through this book in a week. Excited for the next.

Viktor Frankl’s “Man’s Search for Meaning” summed up in Eddie’s story of his own holocaust survival. Absolutely worth the listen.

Surprise surprise, I watched The King on Netflix and wanted to learn more about the real Henry V - if you’re in the same boat than this is a great place to start. Unique and engaging format and grapples with the difficulties of 15th century life and how we may interpret things today. Ian Mortimer is a great guide for engaging the man behind the myth in an objective and thoughtful way.

I’ve read through a lot of the broader histories of Rome, and having just finished Adrian Goldsworthy’s “The Fall of Carthage” this was the perfect follow up on the most interesting period of the Punic Wars and its most leading figure.

While the author is undoubtedly biased about his opinion of Scipio, treating him as a few centuries earlier version of Marcus Aurelius it seems, it’s hard to not share the opinion, biased or not.

Sharing the same great narrator as Goldsworthy’s books creates a great sense on continuity while diving deeper into the specifics of what made Scipio Africanus, as the author argues, worth remembering with (if not surpassing) the other great military commanders of history.

If you're the person who expected season 2 of True Detectives to be the exact same as the first season, then ya you probably won't like how this isn't Ready Player One all over again. But if you can accept that they're two different things then the only thing you'll think of occasionally while over all enjoying this book is that the main character could've used a wider emotional range at times, and maybe that you should re-read Enders Game.

For using a classic story line, Cline brings in good characters with an enjoyable story line and great performance. You should listen.
