The Destiny’s Crucible series chronicles the incredible adventure of Joseph Colsco, a college student of no particular importance who is thrust into an unimaginable fate by an accident that couldn’t happen - but did. Cast naked on the planet Anyar, he forges a new life for himself and rises to prominence and responsibilities he would otherwise never have imagined. However, much is left undone and uncertain.

Fills the gaps
Revisado: 04-23-23
There were questions left in the last book which are now answered (not that I noticed anything missing until I read this book). But I think the introduction of new characters leave open the possibility of the series continuing for a long time

Throughout these books, Follett has followed the fortunes of five intertwined families - American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh - as they make their way through the twentieth century. Now they come to one of the most tumultuous eras of all: the enormous social, political, and economic turmoil of the 1960s through the 1980s, from civil rights, assassinations, mass political movements and Vietnam to the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, presidential impeachment, revolution - and rock and roll.

Excellent wrap up. No characters left hanging and no situations left unfinished. Research was fantastic. Like his more historical works as the best because of the attention to detail.

Have an idea for a work of fiction but don’t know where to start. This is the place.
My only problem was that I was not familiar with many of the pieces of literature that were mentioned. Wish I had read them before taking this great course.

Historia
It started as a routine Miami to Charlotte flight for the passengers, crew, and Federal Air Marshal Stephen Mason. But a freak storm over the Atlantic propels the airliner unexplainably back in time to the early 18th century. They find themselves on the sparsely populated coast of the Carolina Colony. Charles Town is the only English settlement of any size in the area. It's an inhospitable place of vast plantations, slavery, hostile natives, tall ships, and marauding pirates.

Not what was expected and that’s good
Revisado: 09-03-21
So often in a book you figure out the ending in the beginning. This is not one of them The ending was a major portion of the book but if you paid attention all the clues were there so it wasn’t one of those Deus ex machines endings. This is light reading so great for vacations especially in South Carolina.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Better than.
Revisado: 05-28-21
Read this because I was enthralled with the Martian. I was prepared to be disappointed. How could it be it done? Just add Earth facing extinction, creatures eating the sun’s energy and an alien who doesn’t speak English. The alien language is part of the reason for a five star great performance. This book is worth your time.

Historia
In an astonishing feat of empathy and narrative invention, our most ambitious novelist imagines an alternate version of American history. In 1940 Charles A. Lindbergh, heroic aviator and rabid isolationist, is elected president. Shortly thereafter, he negotiates a cordial "understanding" with Adolf Hitler while the new government embarks on a program of folksy anti-Semitism.

Story is not always straight forward The story is not predictable. The characters are realistic. The performance clear. A better ending even though all threads are interwoven would have been better.

More science than fiction
Revisado: 10-07-20
Too many scientific terms were given without explanation. Too much of Mars geography was presented. Story jumps forward decades without mention. Poor character development. Not really is there an ending. Leaves causes unanswered. One good thing is it raised good philosophical questions.

The performance is wonderfully done.
Little details not given can frustrate the reader such as where will Emily live?

Historia
“In wartime,” Winston Churchill wrote, “truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies.” For Britain’s counterintelligence operations, this meant finding the unlikeliest agent imaginable - a history professor named Alfred Vicary, handpicked by Churchill himself to expose a highly dangerous, but unknown, traitor. The Nazis, however, have also chosen an unlikely agent.

Hang in there
Revisado: 10-12-19
The beginning drags on with historical information and for this historians among us even amateurs you might want to give up.
Once the story starts it is intriguing and reminds us how difficult it was to do these type of efforts before modern day communications. As a service member I'm thankful for the now but it's good to reflect on the past cultures.
If the book ended before the last chapter it would have been a start higher. While the author wraps up some plot elements he makes the story a downer and depressing.
