Historia
America was once a country that did big things—we built the world’s greatest rail network, a vast electrical grid, interstate highways, abundant housing, the Social Security system, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and more. But today, even while facing a host of pressing challenges—a housing shortage, a climate crisis, a dilapidated infrastructure—we feel stuck, unable to move the needle. Why?

Sort of boring
Revisado: 03-03-25
While the intro was fun, they bulk of the book ended up reading as a somewhat tedious history. There was an interesting story in the end about Massachusetts-Quebec power pipeline. The book would have benefited from more of these

Historia
Society has never been more egalitarian—in theory. Prejudice is taboo, and diversity is strongly valued. At the same time, social and economic inequality have exploded. In We Have Never Been Woke, Musa al-Gharbi argues that these trends are closely related, each tied to the rise of a new elite—the symbolic capitalists.

Insightful view into “symbolic capitalists”
Revisado: 10-13-24
The author explores “awokenings”, covering the instantiation, motivation, and impacts of these events. The book seems to obliquely reference McWhorter’s latest book, while providing in some ways a more satisfying explanation for similarly observed phenomenon.
This book is a fairly advanced reading level and academic text, including a review of Marxism and critical theories.
Despite mentioning Piketty, I think the author is too dismissive of what is labeled the “super-elite”, eliding the moral and practical differences between earned income and the vast sums of inherited wealth.
The author narration is enjoyable, though at times it is clear the distance from the microphone varied during edits.

Historia
A number-one New York Times best seller and arguably the best business narrative ever written, Barbarians at the Gate is the classic account of the fall of RJR Nabisco. An enduring masterpiece of investigative journalism by Bryan Burrough and John Helyar, it includes a new afterword by the authors that brings this remarkable story of greed and double-dealings up to date 20 years after the famed deal.

Fun finance heavy story
Revisado: 07-05-21
This book requires a fair amount of attention, as it covers a lot of characters. It feels like a good window into what the 1980s LBO craze was like. It focuses less on employees and customers than shareholders and executives.

Boring book
Revisado: 02-17-16
This book was not fun to listen to. The reader was clear, but did not add any energy to a boring book. Additionally, it would be better to read the physical copy, since there are so many billet points and numbered lists

Hilarious book
Revisado: 01-24-16
What did you love best about Catch-22?
It was very funny, and offered a perspective on World War 2 that is not seen often in other books about the war.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The best character was Milo, because he represented the most fantastical and absurd elements of the story
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
I think the primary issue was simply low quality recording equipment.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
A new, hilarious look at WW2

Historia
Russ Harris offers a surprising solution to low self-confidence, shyness, and insecurity: Rather than trying to "get over" our fears, he says, the secret is to form a new and wiser relationship with them. Paradoxically, it's only when we stop struggling against our fearfulness that we begin to find lasting freedom from it.

Annoying tone
Revisado: 01-24-16
What would have made The Confidence Gap better?
A less critical tone of other authors writing about the same subject would have made this book better.
Has The Confidence Gap turned you off from other books in this genre?
I am less interested now in confidence based books, but more interested in a positive mood book about happiness.
Have you listened to any of Graeme Malcolm’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not listened to any other of his performances, but the narration of the book was fine.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Confidence Gap?
I would have reworded the way he said "here's fear". It sounded very mocking and cavalier.
Any additional comments?
No additional comments except for I only paid five dollars for the book and it was probably worth that amount.
