really good
Revisado: 01-30-24
Really enjoy his music and the movie and enjoyed this book. Considering who we are talking about you have to expect some level of flamboyance and sex and drugs. If that doesn't bother you it was really intersting to listen about how it all started and where it has lead him. The good and bad , the ups and downs and how he's helpped others. He's lived a pretty interesting life and it was an intersting listen. Taron egerton did a great job narrating as well as a great job in the movie. He's a great singer and narrator.

Historia
Richard Stratton was the unlikeliest of kingpins. A clean-cut Wellesley boy who entered outlaw culture on a trip to Mexico, he saw his search for a joint morph into a thrill-filled dope run smuggling two kilos across the border in his car door. He became a member of the Hippie Mafia, traveling the world to keep America high, living the underground life while embracing the hippie credo, rejecting hard drugs in favor of marijuana and hashish.

the lebanese hash connection
Revisado: 12-10-23
a good book with some great stories of smuggling advetures centering on a huge load of hash from lebanon and what it took to put it together and make it happen and how it unfolded. only down side was chapter 11 where he carried on about and repeteing the words "p*ssy and c*nt" specificly about those of black women. got kind of offensive. but other than that it was a really good book. good enough that i've listened to it twice now. just didn't care to much for his narration. not a fan of authors narrating their own books. maybe that's just me though?

great story
Revisado: 11-08-23
great book about a very interesting story of true life espionage. one of the greatest spies we had in russia supplying secrets and info that kept us ahead of the russians from the early 80's through the gulf war and beyond. i found it very interesting how the story ends and ties in with another well known story of espionage. i thought the narrator did a great job and found it to be a great listen and really enjoyed it.

not as exciting as I was hoping. expected more dark secrets but it is there via several I guess. obviously no one is hoping to be able to find out the best stuff. the stuff about JFK his brother was very interesting though. the narrator did a very good job and it was a good listen..

a great book
Revisado: 04-18-23
I was hesitant about this book, not sure what to expect but after listening to other books by Annie Jacobsen and enjoying all of them i decided to go ahead and get it and i was not disappointed. I've always enjoyed her writing and narration both. This book was not what i expected and was much better than i thought it would be. Learning how why where and when so many weapons, computer, satalite, and cellular systems and so much more were created was really interesting and informative. Alot of great information about the military, private and academic sectors from the 50's through 2015 when this book was published. Well researched and well read this was a great book.

Historia
In 2011, a 26-year-old libertarian programmer named Ross Ulbricht launched the ultimate free market: the Silk Road, a clandestine website hosted on the Dark Web where anyone could trade anything - drugs, hacking software, forged passports, counterfeit cash, poisons - free of the government's watchful eye. It wasn't long before the media got wind of the new website where anyone - not just teenagers and weed dealers but terrorists and black hat hackers - could buy and sell contraband detection-free.

pretty amazing story
Revisado: 01-08-23
This was an incredibly short 12 hours. This book is so well writen, i was totally engrossed while listening and the time just flew by. In 2011 i actuall bought some Pakistani hash from this site and was shocked that something like this existed. So when i saw it here i knew it was going to be a must read. Such a regular average kid with a daring idea and the balls to take a chance very quickly turned into a criminal mastermind before he realized what happened. It all flew out of control so fast that he was barely able to hold on for the ride and what a short ride it turned out to be. If he had been smarter and more careful and taken security more seriously he might still be out there today. It's just insane how two short years as captain of this ship ended in the ship wreck that it did. I won't give away the ending for you but i'll say i was very surprised. Extremely hard to put down but who can really go through 12 hours in one sitting. Though you might wish you could. The last few minutes almost gave me chills and that was intensified after googleing this kids name and seeing his face and imagining him sitting next to me in some random coffee shop, park or library with his lap top and just having no idea what he was doing.

incredible stuff
Revisado: 12-29-22
First heard about this story in the Tom Hanks movie and wanted to know more so when i found this book here i had to get it. It's an incredible story about incredible events that changed the world, the balance of power in it and influenced the furtue and what the world would and has become. An insight into the government and the world of espionage and how they influence each other. What was accomplished in this operation was amazing and almost unbeleivable and the events it ultimately led to were almost as unbeleivable. This is a fantastic book, well researched, writen and read and hard to pause between sessions.

new very little about the Canadian mob. great to hear more detail on what i did know and how Rizzuto fit in with the american mob. it's always very interesting to hear different views from different people who know or participated in events already talked about in different books or documentaries. when you're tired of hearing about the American mob it's a very interesting and refreshing change. a lot of great stories and a lot of interesting events. as good as i hoped it would be. narrator was good and no complaints.

If anyone could be considered a Russian counterpart to the infamous British double-agent Kim Philby, it was Oleg Gordievsky. The son of two KGB agents and the product of the best Soviet institutions, the savvy, sophisticated Gordievsky grew to see his nation's communism as both criminal and philistine. He took his first posting for Russian intelligence in 1968 and eventually became the Soviet Union's top man in London, but from 1973 on he was secretly working for MI6.
