Jumping into this one and going on more adventures with the Last Picks is fun and engaging right from the beginning. In addition to the main storyline which kept me wanting to know what happened next, the witty humor made me cackle out loud—repeatedly. What was unexpected, though, was the depth of emotion. A story that can be both light/cozy AND deep is a rare thing. This does both very well indeed.

I actually have to thank the narrator, Andrew Gibson, as he’d posted about this one and that’s how I found out about it. Once I get in a groove of listening to books with a really good narrator (like Andrew), I’m often reluctant to switch horses. So I knew I’d enjoy the performance of this audiobook right away. But then the story itself was EQUALLY AMAZING. I’ve been a mystery (and cozy mystery) fan my entire life. As with other genres, I will
never tire or FINALLY reading about characters who, like me, are gay. Decades of never finding representation in fiction, and now finding it, is like finding a sense of acceptance and belonging again.

And that aside, this story was fun. I thought I had the entire thing figured out early—but only had about 50% of it figured out, and that was a pleasant surprise, too. And, come on—who doesn’t love a big old mansion full of colourful characters, a very relatable protagonist, and a cute deputy who seems like he’s interested in him? I was so glad to hear there are several books in this series, because I’m immediately going right on to the next book.

I’ve always loved stories of many kinds, but haunted houses…now, those were my THING as a kid. I was the dork who would sneak off looking for secret passageways in interesting old houses (usually to the embarrassment of my family, if they were with me!) I devoured books about haunted houses, always so fascinated by the stories they told (the books and the houses in the books). But something was always missing. The groups of friends were always completely straight, and for a queer kid trying (and failing) so find just one character like themselves, it was always a subtle rebuke: “You’re not one of us.” Find your own lunch table, because you can’t sit here.

The Haunting Between Us is the first haunted house story where I really felt like the message was “You ARE one of us.” This book is like a warm hug to me—a bit ironic, I know, because it’s a story about a haunted house, and a scary one at that. The story itself gets downright freaking terrifying in several parts. I kid you not that I broke out in severe goosebumps at SEVERAL points during the story. I don’t think that’s ever happened before. Yet despite that—it’s still a warm hug, too. The dynamic of this group of friends, where everyone is accepted and welcome, was something the teenage version of myself was desperately looking for, both in real life and in the stories I read. And the relationship between Cameron and Hugo is such a wonderful journey. Trials and tribulations, of course (no story, or real life, would be complete without them!!) but the way they grow together, express their feelings, and care for and protect each other…wow. It’s a soothing balm after decades of reading stories that either had a lack of representation completely, or sad/bad/negative vibes.

The parental dynamics are also very real and also very emotional for me. I won’t go into details as I don’t want to spoil anything, but this was so well done. Parents are often one-dimensional bookends in YA stories, there out of necessity but kind of in the way. Not so, with the parents in this story.

And all that aside, it’s got amazing adventure and exploration and mystery and horror (and some lines that made me burst out laughing) and an absolute pleasure to read. And yes, the ending made me tear up for sure…another example of how this book hits home on so many emotional levels.

There needs to be a word for the feeling of riding a wave, of coming off a book you absolutely love and that resonates so well, and you know that whatever you read next won’t compare. I’m totally satisfied with the ending yet also so extremely sad that I’ve come to the end of the story, because I am totally going to miss checking in with Cameron and Hugo and their friends. I guess I’ll just have to start rereading again from the beginning.

Oh man. When I say this was a hell of a journey, I mean obviously both literally AND figuratively. Erik J Brown does NOT pull punches. Andrew and Jamie (as well as the others) go through so much. There’s never a break. But I was right there with them, emotionally, through the entire thing. Could not put this down. Even when I had to, I’d still be thinking about it until I could start reading again.

I’ll admit that the first part of the story made me wonder if I’d like where it was going, because there was a lot of uncertainty (I mean, deservedly so) and the whole “kids” thing did seem like a distraction to me at first. But each chapter that went by, I became more and more invested and enamored by the way Andrew and Jamie’s journey unfolded.

A lot of times, I get to the end of a story and feel that something is missing. There wasn’t a single thing missing from this. Everything felt right, everything was addressed. Both of these books will always be cherished by me, because it never gets old, being able to read a story about characters like myself (at least in some ways).

And once again, Andrew Gibson and Barrett Leddy give amazing performances as narrators. Their voices are perfect for these roles. Well done, all.

I will never tire of finding books that I wish I found—that I wish EXISTED—when I was a teen, searching desperately for queer representation anywhere in the fiction I loved to read (and hardly ever finding any.) Discovering All That’s Left in the World as an adult is just as satisfying, though. I’m a sucker for adventure stories and fighting onward despite great odds, and boy, this story has plenty of that. Plus two protagonists, Andrew and Jamison, who I fell for right away. Their journey together, both the literal and the metaphorical, swept me along (even as I wanted to good-maturely tell them to get on with it already!) but it was definitely satisfying. The story matter itself may be dark, as postapocalyptic stories have to be, but I did laugh—and sigh, and groan, and roll my eyes, and most of all swoon. Barrett Leddy and Andrew Gibson both did an amazing job with narration, too. There’s a lot of love here.

When I was a teen, I searched for (and never found) a story like this. One that spoke to me, and had my kind of romance. Finding it later in adulthood is just as sweet, and the inner lonely teen says thank you. Together in a Broken World is AMAZING. It has ALL of my favourite things: toms of adventure, suspense, exploration, mystery, plot twists, unforgettable settings, characters I fell in love with instantly, and even good cars. I could gush about how much I loved this story for paragraphs and paragraphs, but it’d probably get repetitive and boring, so: this is a story I will reread/relisten to (the narrator of the audiobook version is Amazon too) so many times. So much emotion, and such a wild ride. This is one of my absolute most favourite books.

I read this for the spiciness, so I was not disappointed in the least. This story was hot af 🔥🔥🔥 and it scratched the itch. Yes, Adam is vapid and annoying most of the time, but Minos more than made up for it, and the narrators were PERFECT. This was fun. I’ll definitely come back and read/listen to it again.

Let Your Hearts Be Light is amazing. This is one of those reviews where I can’t really formulate my thoughts very coherently because I’m just so in love with the story itself. Baxter and Paxton are both adorable, and their kids, Becca and Nathan, just steal the show in their own way too. I was drawn right into their daily lives and trials and tribulations. And this story does what many try but few are able to do—it’s equally sweet and spicy (and so much of both, in a good way.) Definitely the sexiest holiday romance I’ve ever listened too…but just as heartfelt, too. I was honestly crying like crazy over the last few chapters. I just want to keep listening to this one over and over.

And, OMG. Stephen Dexter and Liam DiCosimo were the perfect choices for this audiobook. Their performances were AMAZING in all the scenes. The spicy ones knocked my socks off, lol. And the sweet (or sad, or emotional) scenes just totally tore at my heart, in a good way.

Totally intense story and highly, highly recommended. Nothing but love for Let Your Hearts Be Light.

I went into this one expecting it to be more lighthearted from the premise, but as the story progressed, it was anything but. And that’s totally fine too, because the range of emotions was as exquisite as it was bittersweet—and since the description states there’s a HEA, I don’t feel it’s spoilers to say that obviously yes everything ends up in a good spot. But getting there made me FEEL, a lot. This is the second of Annabeth Albert’s books, and once again its emotional depth and feeling has me literally tearing up. This one was a solid 4/4.5 stars for me at the beginning, but by the end, it had totally won me over for a full 5 stars.

What a cozy, sexy, and FEEL GOOD story this is. I was drawn in instantly. That’s especially a good feeling as it doesn’t seem to happen to me with many books these days. Gideon and Paul, as well as the supporting characters, were all perfect. I was totally cheering for them, and the story unfolds in such a satisfying way. Hallmark holiday movies have nothing on The Geek Who Saved Christmas. I can’t count how many times I exclaimed or laughed out loud at certain exchanges (the funny ones and the spicy ones, the latter of which were done exceedingly well) and the full range of emotions were on display. Crying, too—I honestly teared up at a few key moments. This story was like a warm holiday hug, satisfyingly rich, and one I can’t wait to revisit next December. Well done, Annabeth Albert. And Tim Paige’s performance as narrator knocked it out of the park. He’s amazing too. There is so much to love here.
