Ok but not my favorite
Revisado: 04-15-25
I finished it but had trouble understanding the father. His voice is very deep and he whispered so much. So raspy I had to slow the speech down and replay too often.

Hugo, a gentle red-haired, home-schooled giant, is also in love with Kismet. He’s determined to steal her and is eager to be a home wrecker. Kismet's mother, Crystal, hauls sugar beets for Gary's family, and on her nightly runs, tunes into the darkness of late-night radio, sees visions of guardian angels.

Historia
Ninety-one-year-old Gretel Fernsby has lived in the same well-to-do mansion block in London for decades. She lives a quiet, comfortable life, despite her deeply disturbing, dark past. She doesn’t talk about her escape from Nazi Germany at age 12. She doesn’t talk about the grim post-war years in France with her mother. Most of all, she doesn’t talk about her father, who was the commandant of one of the Reich’s most notorious extermination camps. All The Broken Places moves between Gretel’s girlhood in Germany to present-day London as a woman haunted by the past.

I found this book to be very enjoyable but I like getting my heart ripped out. I rate it right up there with Sarah’s Key and The Book Thief. May be my favorite.

Historia
The three Blue sisters are exceptional—and exceptionally different. Avery, the eldest and a recovering heroin addict turned strait-laced lawyer, lives with her wife in London; Bonnie, a former boxer, works as a bouncer in Los Angeles following a devastating defeat; and Lucky, the youngest, models in Paris while trying to outrun her hard-partying ways. They also had a fourth sister, Nicky, whose unexpected death left the family reeling. A year later, as they each navigate grief, addiction and ambition, they find they must return to New York to stop the sale of the apartment they were raised in.

I’m 67 and have not been aware of Mr Shapiro until I watched The Mole. He intrigued me. I loved the experiences and the stories of all the people around the world. So glad I listened and will eagerly look for his work in the future.

Disappointment
Revisado: 07-22-24
Where was the ending? There was supposed to be a surprise about how the main character handled her problem. I wasn’t surprised at all. It wasn’t resolved in my opinion. I would not recommend this book and will not read this author again.
