Could not suspend disbelief

The story and characters are interesting and the setting is certainly unique, but I could not finish this one. The style is H.R. Giger meets H. P. Lovecraft but it all comes off a little bit silly. The juxtaposition of body horror with childish story elements like making a hot air balloon with a light bulb makes no sense.

Pleasant, romanticized space exploration

I did enjoy this novel, but found it a bit unsatisfying and anti-climactic. The four main characters all apparently have an open relationship with each other, but that has no bearing on the story. There isn't much character development or plot arc. They just bounce from place to place and deal with things, then it ends. Please don't take all this as criticisms though. It was a nice, relaxing listen. I just want you to know what to expect.

Book three is the best so far

The restarts in book one were a bit tedious with much of the same material being covered again and again. Book two felt as though it didn't move the overarching plot forward much. But now in book three things are getting exciting with the end approaching. There is still some seemingly needles filler, but the story moves forward nicely. As always the narration is brilliant, amiably depicting the transformation from a stuck up, sheltered, arrogant boy to an archmage.

Only the first part

When you start a series you expect each novel within the series to be a complete plot arc which also moves forward the overarching plot. That is not the case here. This is very much only part one and does not come to any kind of satisfying conclusion. Craig Alanson is a talented author so this is a good story, and the narrator is excellent as well. It just annoys me when novels are split up into multiple volumes solely to wring more money out of us.

Very cute

The characters are likeable, the story is interesting, and the world is unique and fun. The performance is quite good. Unfortunately, plot twists are so heavily telegraphed that it's hard to imagine even young readers being surprised. Still, it's a cute, easy read and well worth the time.

Interesting but stilted

The story is strangely paced and presents as awkward and unnatural. The romance never really gets anywhere. All that being said the world and characters are interesting (although their names are tiresome). I wouldn't call this a bad book at all, you just have to be a forgiving reader to enjoy it.

Delightful, albeit a bit slow

The story did drag at times, but it was also very compelling and I was never tempted to quit. The narration is genuinely excellent with authentic seeming pronunciation from the different types of character. Although some plot points are telegraphed too strongly so you sometimes know what's coming, the story is twisty which I found delightful. I just wish there were an epilogue...

Very much a first installment

Interesting, endearing characters and a good start of a story. Many of the plot elements don't get resolutions, though. I wish I'd waited a few years to read the whole series at once.

An interesting, unique story, with compelling characters, well presented by an excellent narrator. However, the plot arc felt incomplete to me when the abrupt end came. Is this the first in a series?
