A Past Era Brought Vividly To Life
Revisado: 03-25-25
A minor criticism: The narrator doesn't distinguish voices between speakers so it can take a moment to figure out who is speaking.
Often the books tought in schools can seem overrated, but not this one. It's as close as Huck Finn or Moby Dick to being the Great American Novel, and like them a snapshot of a past that seems both foreign and familiar.

Historia
Outside Los Angeles, a driver pulls up to find a young woman sitting on a large black box. She offers him $200,000 cash to transport her and that box across the country, to Washington, DC. But there are rules: He cannot look inside the box. He cannot ask questions. He cannot tell anyone. They must leave immediately. He must leave all trackable devices behind. As these eccentric misfits hit the road, rumors spread on social media that the box is part of a carefully orchestrated terror attack intended to plunge the USA into civil war.

Historia
In the late 1960s, in the town of Bonn, capital of West Germany, a British Embassy officer by the name of Leo Harting goes missing—and forty-three confidential-or-higher files with him. Dispatched from the British Foreign Office to investigate, Alan Turner arrives in Bonn to find riots, protests, and a tenuous balance of power. As if there isn’t enough pressure, the embassy’s head of Chancery, Rawley Bradfield, makes it clear he has no intentions of making Turner’s investigation an easy one.

A Change Of Pace For le Carrè
Revisado: 01-27-25
Good story that's not quite a spy story and not quite a thriller. Le Carrè wrote it at a dark time in his life and his cynicism shows more than usual. Not his best novel, but certainly in the top half.
I didn't find the narrator as objectionable as did some other reviewers. The voices were distinct enough, and the accents changed sufficiently to indicate social class.

More Complicated Than You Think
Revisado: 11-25-24
If you start out thinking it's a well-written, but predictable, thriller you're partly right. But it's the details and machinations behind the scenes, some of which are revealed only at the very end, that elevate The Fourth Protocol to the top tier of Cold War thrillers.

Historia
In The MAGA Diaries, she tells not only her story of loving and leaving the conservative movement but the history of the right wing, painting a shocking picture of how they recruit, train, and indoctrinate generations of young people and shape them into the influential leaders and the supporting cast of tomorrow’s Republican party. They are ruthless in building robust networks of power, even if it means demolishing entire civic institutions, from women’s rights to fair elections—and staging a coup when it doesn’t work out.

Excellent Insight Into The Personalities And Ecosystem Of The Right
Revisado: 01-19-24
From dating Chuck Johnson in prep school and college, to her white supremacist mentor John Elliott at IHS, to working for and wanting to be Tucker Carlson, Tina Nguyen writes about her journey through the right, her escape from the right-wing media ghetto and her career chronicling the American right with a depth of insight gained from knowing the people and institutions involved.
Another plus is she narrates her own story rather than relying on a professional reader. 5 stars.

Historia
Skilled Royal Air Force bomber pilot Sam Lambert is exhausted, and his veteran crewmen have just been replaced by an inexperienced new team. Victor von Löwenherz, a German night fighter pilot who intercepts RAF bombers in his Junkers Ju 88, looks on with horror at the Nazi regime. And Hansl, a German boy in the small market town of Altgarten, sleeps at home. Lambert and his crew prepare for a bombing raid on the Ruhr area. It’s a night that many will never forget. Bomber is a masterful, gripping minute-by-minute account of what occurs over the next twenty-four hours.
