I loved Will's compassion and empathy for everyone he encounters with. I also love Maggy's grit and sass.

I just love the men in John deacon's books
Revisado: 04-11-25
I've read quite a few of John's books and something I love is the men. They can be tough and ready to fight but when they fall in love they fall fast and hard. Lane and Susie's scene at her cottage with the flowers had me squealing like a little girl. platonic and romantic relationships are so well written, and just make these books jems. I love them!

Historia
When Will Bentley was nine years old, he promised his dying father that he would take care of the family. Growing up quickly, Will provided whatever his mother and sister needed, whether that meant putting food on the table, fixing a leaky roof, or driving off troublemakers. This became more than Will's duty. It became his identity. Then war took him away. Now, Will's coming home to Texas. Caring for his family and the intriguing young woman next door will be a tall order. The economy is dead, corrupt bluebellies are on the prowl, and old enemies want Will's land, his women, and his life.

Fun story of an all American young man with a heart of gold and love of family
Revisado: 10-02-24
so I actually have listened to this story cover to cover 3 times now. Something I rarely do, even if I love a book I rarely go back to it. A little short compared to what I'm used to, but theres something to be said in me listening to it multiple times.
I love exploring the male perspective, and Will although a young man was an interesting character. The romance was sweet, two babies finding and being in love(I'm just 3 years older than Will but they're babies to me lol). Looking forward to the rest of the series and more from this author, love finding my kind of people!

we all can relate to moments when we also feel lost and wander
Revisado: 10-02-24
so the last chapters of the book (chapter 19 or so till the end) had me on the verge of tears trying to keep tears from spilling over. Exploring the idea that leads to the book's namesake just ugh, so beautifully explored and done. Little details that all come together throughout the course of the story, as if everything was planned out from the beginning and lead to the conclusions it needed to.
the female narrator's nasal-y depiction of male voices took some getting used to but both did such a good job. Not a lot of books have separate narrators so it was a nice treat.

The trouble is that there is only one man Margaret can think of, or rather, one she cannot forget, and he wouldn’t do as a husband at all. Then she finds herself in his care unexpectedly, and her hunt becomes even more complicated than she could have ever imagined.

the reviews don't do the story justice lol
Revisado: 05-26-23
did we read the same book? How did no one mention that this is basically a regency, swashbuckler version of Disneys Lady and the tramp lolol the alley rescue scene, the jail scene with the ladies, the breaking into the house, it took notes from the story and I was here for it all. It may just be that I have a soft spot for The Lady and the Tramp story but I loved it so much that I'm actually writing a review.
The ending was a little anticlimactic compared to what has happened in previous chapters, but I could not stop cheesing at the main couple's relationship and moments together. I just could not with those 2, super adorbs! Had me swooning and grinning like crazy. But the scheme revealed towards the end? I was audibly shocked.
I've been bookmarking my favorite scenes and listening to chapters over and over, so much meat on the bone and I was just eating it up. Eager to read more!
