The chapter headers...

The story and narrator are fine, great WW1 feel following a young guard recruit through his first deployment. However, the already predictable progress of the tale is completely revealed in the beginning of each chapter by the headers. Some chapters had five sentences that just laid out the whole following chapter. Like, "He does this " then "This is the result". So annoying because without that, this would be a solid four out of five.

Like a siege, this book drags.

Don't get me wrong, if you're a veteran Black Library reader or are interested at all in the history of the Krieg then this book will probably do something for you. The book spends its time in two eras, one before the Cicatrix Maledictum and one right after, with the earlier tale being a history of the Krieg civil war and the later story following a Death Corps battle against orks, but the time skips are abrupt and inconsistent. Over all, as far as 40k books go, Krieg is a tasty treat just not a very filling one.
