Historia
Kim Edwards' stunning novel begins on a winter night in 1964 in Lexington, Kentucky, when a blizzard forces Dr. David Henry to deliver his own twins. His son, born first, is perfectly healthy, but the doctor immediately recognizes that his daughter has Down syndrome. Rationalizing it as a need to protect Norah, his wife, he makes a split-second decision that will alter all of their lives forever. He asks his nurse, Caroline, to take the baby away to an institution and never to reveal the secret. Instead she disappears into another city to raise the child herself.

Good but not my cup of tea
Revisado: 05-19-23
This book feels so slow because it concentrates so heavily on what the characters are feeling and not so much on what they are doing. I can understand why people would be attracted to this but, for me, this story felt like it wouldn’t end after a while.

Just as satisfying as the web series
Revisado: 01-02-23
This work makes classical literature approachable without sacrificing the source material. This is a fantastic resource and I legitimately wished they would write a textbook because this is a far more effective method of introducing people to great works of literature than more traditional methods

Historia
Since it was first published more than 25 years ago, Robert Fitzgerald's prizewinning translation of Homer's battle epic has become a classic in its own right: a standard against which all other versions of The Iliad are compared. Fitzgerald's work is accessible, ironic, faithful, written in a swift vernacular blank verse that "makes Homer live as never before" ( Library Journal).

The performance was really well done. It helped me stay engaged with the material. It’s a long story and not having an engaging performer would make it harder to get through

Historia
In a book that took eight years to research and write, leading Bible scholar Bart D. Ehrman explores how an apocalyptic prophet from the backwaters of rural Galilee crucified for crimes against the state came to be thought of as equal with the one God Almighty Creator of all things. Ehrman sketches Jesus's transformation from a human prophet to the Son of God exalted to divine status at his resurrection. Only when some of Jesus's followers had visions of him after his death - alive again - did anyone come to think that he, the prophet from Galilee, had become God.

It's a lot to take in, I tell you what
Revisado: 04-05-20
I am a history student and I am interested in early Christianity. I was already familiar with many of the concepts brought forth by Ehrman but, after reading his work, I feel more confident in my understanding in the evolution of Christian theology. This is a very complex topic and yet Ehrman was able to explain the nuances of the early Christian world and historical methodology in a very approachable way. Though I think Ehrman approached this topic with sensitivity, he never deviated from his scholarly approach. I am very impressed!

Historia
In The Fall of Rome, eminent historian Bryan Ward-Perkins argues that the "peaceful" theory of Rome's "transformation" is badly in error. Indeed, he sees the fall of Rome as a time of horror and dislocation that destroyed a great civilization, throwing the inhabitants of the West back to a standard of living typical of prehistoric times. Attacking contemporary theories with relish and making use of modern archaeological evidence, he looks at both the wider explanations for the disintegration of the Roman world and also the consequences for the lives of everyday Romans.

Perkins gives a concise, nuanced, and compelling discussion on how to approach late antiquity. Definitely worth a read if you are interested in how Rome deviled and how the medieval period began.

Historia
From the internationally bestselling author of No god but God comes a fascinating, provocative, and meticulously researched biography that challenges long-held assumptions about the man we know as Jesus of Nazareth. Sifting through centuries of mythmaking, Reza Aslan sheds new light on one of history's most influential and enigmatic characters by examining Jesus through the lens of the tumultuous era in which he lived: first-century Palestine, an age awash in apocalyptic fervor.

A great book for beginners or casual readers of religious history
Revisado: 02-22-20
I was skeptical at first but Aslan makes a compelling argument that the historic Jesus was a social and religious reformer whose primary concern was creating a system of equality and not creating a new religion. Aslan’s work is NOT written in a highly academic style which makes it easy to read and understand. I would say my only issue with this book (the hard copy that is) is that it doesn’t have any footnotes so it is hard to assess where he got his information. There is a notes section and a bibliography but it can’t tell you what pages to look at if you want to fact check him. Overall, if you have the slightest interest in this topic, this is worth a listen.

i>Imagined Communities, Benedict Anderson's brilliant book on nationalism, forged a new field of study when it first appeared in 1983. Since then it has sold over a quarter of a million copies and is widely considered the most important book on the subject. In this greatly anticipated revised edition, Anderson updates and elaborates on the core question: What makes people live and die for nations, as well as hate and kill in their names?

Well worth listening too
Revisado: 12-11-19
Without getting too deep into detail, IC gives a rather satisfying argument as to what nationalism is, how do we understand it, and where it came from. However, I was not satisfied with Anderson’s analysis on the relation but racism and nationalism. Other than that, this is an essential read for anyone interested in political or social history

Plato: A Very Short Introduction

Historia
This lively and accessible introduction to Plato focuses on the philosophy and argument of his writings, drawing the listener into Plato's way of doing philosophy, and the general themes of his thinking. This is not an audiobook to leave the listener standing in the outer court of introduction and background information, but leads directly into Plato's argument. It looks at Plato as a thinker grappling with philosophical problems in a variety of ways, rather than a philosopher with a fully worked-out system.

Simple introduction to Plato
Revisado: 12-14-17
Philosophy is not the easiest subject to grasp but this book does a good job simplifying and giving a broad understanding of Plato’s works. I would highly suggest this to anyone who is about to take a philosophy course. The narrator is a bit robotic though. She annunciates well but it has no emotion.

I loved Ian MacKellen's performance but the recording was terrible. I could hear background noise some of the time and there was one part when the audio seemed sluggish. like some one slowed down the pace. other than that, this translation was great and not too difficult to follow.

There are parts that would repeat what was said 30 seconds to a minute prior. The book does a good job telling the many different versions of the same story which I did enjoy but got a little confusing.
