Historia
The Kennedy name has long been synonymous with wealth, power, glamor, and—above all else—integrity. But this carefully constructed veneer hides a dark truth: the pattern of Kennedy men physically and psychologically abusing women and girls, leaving a trail of ruin and death in each generation’s wake. Through decades of scandal after scandal—from sexual assaults to reputational slander, suicides to manslaughter—the family and their defenders have kept the Kennedy brand intact.

A searing book.

I knew these interwoven stories of abuse and misogyny would enrage me, and they did. Kudos to the author, and so much love to the families of all the girls and women who fell into the gears of the Kennedy machine.

Historia
Alexandra Lange now turns her sharp eye to another subject we only think we know. She chronicles post-war architects’ and merchants’ invention of the mall, revealing how the design of these marketplaces played an integral role in their cultural ascent. In Lange’s perceptive account, the mall becomes newly strange and rich with contradiction: Malls are environments of both freedom and exclusion—of consumerism, but also of community. Meet Me by the Fountain is a highly entertaining and evocative promenade through the mall’s story of rise, fall and ongoing reinvention.

All-around great.

Terrific research, writing, pacing, and narration. It’s also significantly more hopeful than I expected. This is the first book I bought in a bookstore while I was still listening to it so I can revisit it. It’s that good.

Historia
April 25, 1986 in Chernobyl was a turning point in world history. The disaster not only changed the world’s perception of nuclear power and the science that spawned it, but also our understanding of the planet’s delicate ecology. With the images of the abandoned homes and playgrounds beyond the barbed wire of the 30-kilometer Exclusion Zone, the rusting graveyards of contaminated trucks and helicopters, the farmland lashed with black rain, the event fixed for all time the notion of radiation as an invisible killer.

Terrific balance of detail and tension!

Higgimbotham’s research is always excellent. This is a dark story, but I was too young at the time to remember it clearly. I appreciate the illumination here.

Historia
Patric Gagne realized she made others uncomfortable before she started kindergarten. Something about her caused people to react in a way she didn’t understand. She suspected it was because she didn’t feel things the way other kids did. Emotions like fear, guilt, and empathy eluded her. For the most part, she felt nothing. And she didn’t like the way that “nothing” felt.

11 hours of my life I won’t get back
Revisado: 05-21-24
I don’t know what I expected from a sociopath, lmao. It’s safe to say that most reconstructed interactions in this memoir didn’t happen the way she recalls them, if they happened at all. But she’s got a terrific voice, and I’m glad she’s feeling good about her life choices now.

Joe McGinnis was the best at this.
Revisado: 10-08-23
I read this book as a teenager after watching the miniseries back in the 1980s. If anything, the afterwords have improved it.
It’s tiring listening to the digressions of a narcissistic psychopath, but the way McGinnis wove them into the court cases was so good. This is what journalists do best, and no one ever did it better.
