London, 1923. Newly minted research assistant Saffron Everleigh is the first woman to hold the position at University College of London. When she attends a dinner party for the school, she expects to engage in conversations about the university's large expedition to the Amazon. What she doesn’t expect is for Mrs. Henry, one of the professors’ wives, to drop to the floor, poisoned by an unknown toxin. Dr. Maxwell, Saffron’s mentor, is the main suspect, and evidence quickly mounts.

Bored
Revisado: 12-29-22
This could have been a really interesting story. The premise of a female botanist in a male dominated academic setting caught up in a murder was initially really intriguing. Piecing together botany clues to catch a murderer? Sign me up!
Unfortunately, there was a lack of initial character and setting development that left me confused and unconnected to the main character for most of the story. I kept reading because I thought surely there would be some clarity to the madness, but I just really didn’t connect with the main character. Instead of a mystery with clues to decipher, most of the story leaned heavily into academic abuse and an awkwardly forced romance. I was really disappointed in the missed opportunity to write a strong female protagonist in a mystery novel.
Overall, it left me bored and counting down the minutes for the story to wrap up.

Incredibly Insightful and Beauitfully Written
Revisado: 02-22-22
Made in China is provocative and jarring. Anna Qu explores her own childhood traumas and the generational trauma that has influenced her. I appreciated the statistics and history she includes to help explain the historical implications of what immigrating to America looks like today.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

LOVED. IT.
The descriptions of Kia's love for the marsh was beautiful and eery at the same time. The ending was perfect.
