Interesting "Flashback" story
Revisado: 09-20-22
The characters were at their best here! While I missed the fun Egyptian history tidbits, I think the intensity of the Ramses/David growth made up for it.

Entertaining
Revisado: 09-18-22
This is entertaining, but definitely one of the more "placeholder" books in the series. It doesn't have the level of suspense or humor that many of the other volumes have.

Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Really Powerful, Surprising, and Memorable
Revisado: 05-24-18
Anyone looking at him now, beautiful, joking, always smiling for the camera, could not imagine this story.
Sure, some parts were predictable. The racism, the bit fitting in anywhere because he was neither white nor black, the hiding, even some of the mischief. The abuse too was not shocking. Maybe it should have been, but it seems something I'm immune to. Lots of people go through horrible abuse, particularly famous people. It's part of what gives them the strength to keep trying to climb higher in the game ladder.
But some of it was both shocking and appalling. He admitted to doing things that could have ruined his life. He never mentions how his comedy saved him, just one day doing bad shit, next day a comic who can outright pay a hospital bill.
But it was good all the same, it's good to see behind a TV mask to a real person.

Historia
Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Too Predictable, Too Dark
Revisado: 05-09-18
It was an ok story. It took me almost half the book though to care about any of the characters. By the point I did start caring about them, the book took very predictable turns, and was clearly going to be mostly sorrow. It's not really something I enjoy. If you're going to have that much grief, there needs to be more action.

Why we think it’s a great listen: There’s no gentle way to put this – Frank McCourt’s performance of Angela’s Ashes is just better than the Pulitzer Prize-winning book. Frank McCourt shares his sometimes heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking story of growing up poor, Irish, and Catholic in the Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir Angela's Ashes.

Why do people like this book?
Revisado: 04-26-18
I suppose there is some redeeming quality in this book by giving a glimpse into the life of the poor in Ireland around WWII. But really, that's it. It's boring. It's depressing. I didn't laugh once or enjoy a single minute of listening to this book. It was like a chore. So many people have said it was such good literature that I felt like I had to finish it and figure out why it was good. But frankly, it isn't. It's simply boring.

Ugh, really???
Revisado: 09-19-17
What would have made The Once and Future King better?
The book was about half treatise of one sort or another, and the Book of Merlin was so boring with it that I barely finished. Besides that, once you got past the part that had been made into the beloved Disney film, it became so depressing you almost didn't want to know what would happen next.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The first part of the story was charming. Watching Wart grow up gave a depth to the wonderful old "Sword in the Stone" movie.

Rocky, but Powerful
Revisado: 09-09-17
This book wove together so many tough subjects, but managed to do it with a consistent story line. The plot twists could be seen a mile away, but I think that was intentional. It felt like knowing drew you deeper into the complete humanity of the characters, the secrets, flaws, all of it.
I especially liked the way it explored the world of severe social anxiety. As a person who has lived with crippling anxiety my entire life, it was interesting to see it reflected in a character from an earlier time period. You read the lines and just ache as you see it worsen and worsen. For me it was a glimpse into what my life might have been like if I was living in a world before pharmacology.
The other themes, divorce and custody, the fallout of sexual molestation, the way betrayal can deform lives, all of it was crafted quite well. The most striking thing is how well it illustrated the finality of human decisions. Nothing, once done, can ever truly be undone. You can make amends, you can go back and finish unfinished goals, but you can never actual undo anything in the past, and usually you can't even want to. Even the worst things that happen, the worst decisions, the worst betrayal, all of it still leads forward to a new place. And somehow, humans manage to find joy where they are in some way. It's almost impossible to actually want to give up the gifts of today in order to change the past, no matter how terrible it was.

This is probably one of the top five "stand alone" books I've ever read. I just loved it! It is the true "modern fairy tale". There is just no book more romantic than this.
