The podcast is extremely well researched and presented. Even bands that I have extensive knowledge about, I learn a lot. The musical outtakes and the breadth of the podcast is amazing

If you want to learn about the history, nature, people, and music of Colombia this is the book for you.
The book uses the Magdalena (the Mississippi of Colombia) as a foil to describe the nature and the stories of this most unique land. The breadth of the book is immense - from the freshwater manatees, to the atrocities of paramilitaries, to the history of the founding of the nation, to the evolution of cumbia.

The narration is spot on. Interesting, layered, book.

I do not understand the positive reviews of this book. It is on Obama's list of recommended books for example.

The plot and writing are ponderous. The book is 4 pieces of narration of different viewpoints of a husband and wife who are at the center of the finances of the roaring 20s and the great crash. Who is the true genius in the relationship? The answer is who cares.....

I enjoy Sci-Fi and this obviously one is one of the classics.

The first half of the book is fascinating - the man from Mars arrives: naive, powerful, inherently different, child-like, and the humans who encounter him try to use him. But then the book to me departs from this interesting beginning, this weird account of a sex cult, (which the martian leads), which from today's perspective is shockingly incongruent and pointless really. The female characters are all shockingly sexists in their conception - sexpots waiting to be spoiled by the martian. The reliance of sex as part of the narration and description of the society in this novel is not relevant in today's world. Perhaps from the perspective of the 1950s, this book had insights and was shocking or had other attributes that made it alluring, but from the current perspective of our times, it reads as a male teenage sex fantasy (and a boring one at that!).
It was hard to get through.

Without getting political, I admire Michelle Obama. And I thought this book would be filled with insights and wisdom.
I thought she would talk about how the lessons her parents gave her left her well positioned to conquer life or insights about to have a strong marriage when your spouse is very domineering (or?) or how to raise children or how to deal with difficult moments or .....?

Instead, it reads like a series of unconnected events without any introspection or analysis. I waited for portions that would provide some wisdom, teaching, but they never came. Basically, she lead an uneventful childhood (with very little racism), was smart, got into a good college and got a well paying job (which found meaningless), was a little lost until she meet Barak, and that is about it. I listen to about 2/3 of it and gave up.

I am not going to write a long review. I enjoy Audible very much and have a monthly subscription, which makes me vary the themes of the books I download. At times, I enjoy non-fiction and try to find books about subjects I know very little about.

This book chronicles the last fifty years or so of the war in Northern Ireland. The book is extremely well researched, written, and organized. The book ostensibly is centered around the disappearance of a mother of 10, who the IRA kidnaps and kills thinking she is a tout (traitor). The book uses this crime as starting point into thoroughly examining the war through horrific actions and tactics of each side of the conflict. The book is indictment on Gerry Adams and other heroes of the struggle, particularly noting their callousness and at the same time indicts the British government all the way to Thatcher for their heartlessness. The book thoroughly and convincingly illuminates a recent horrible chapter of history, and is a must listen to anyone interested in recent events and Northern Ireland.

This is fun but not a great story. I would recommend it for a car trip with teenagers or kids. The idea of duplication is interesting but in the end does not contribute much to the story or suggest anything philosophical. The two duplicates oddly seem to have different personalities and the narration only follows ones of them. It seems like an opportunity lost.

That being said, the story is fun - about colonization in a far away planet - and paints a vivid picture of a far away planet.

This is a non serious sci-fi story about taming Kaijus (a.k.a. Godzillas). The narration is solid, the story is fun, and easy. Could be listened with children in the car on a summer trip. It is profound? No. But, it is a fun light story.

The author's style and craftwork are fitting match to Fitzgerald! A beautiful addition to take on the quintessential American novel - in the spirit of Circe - a female perspective augmenting the most famous american novel.

The story is layered, the characters are compelling, the action is brisk, and really beautifully written. Each sentence and scene is well crafted and economical and to the point - no superfluous descriptions or plotlines. I highly recommend it.

This book is not a sci-fi story. The story is about a father and a son’s relationship - with superficial anti right wing and pro environmental arguments in the background. The story is shallow and boring. It reads like the author wrote in a few weeks.
