Historia
Nikki Burgess survived a terrible marriage and a worse divorce. She's just about given up hope of ever finding happiness. But when her ex-husband suddenly dies, she gets custody of her kids again - and a chance to start over. Dixie McPherson, on the other hand, has had way too much love. She has 11 tennis bracelets, dozens of trinkets, piles of sexy lingerie, and a tarnished reputation when all she ever wanted was true love, a partner, and a family. Carlisle Bartlett is loyal, kindhearted, and the funniest guy slinging drinks in the back of an airplane. But he has an ugly little secret. The only kind of love he's used to comes with bruises.

I love the strength of the female characters in all Carr’s books! I have binged so many of them over the past few months.

Needed trigger alerts
Revisado: 01-30-24
This is, at its core, a story of friendship and co-dependency. If I’d known it would devolve into such a graphic description of drug addiction and the heartbreak that accompanies that journey for family and friends, never mind the addict themselves, I would have steered clear. I love Ann Patchett’s writing but this was a sad, familiar tale I hated to relive. How I wish I’d read the reviews I now see described exactly what I was in for!

Historia
In the summer after graduating from college, Suleika Jaouad was preparing, as they say in commencement speeches, to enter “the real world”. She had fallen in love and moved to Paris to pursue her dream of becoming a war correspondent. The real world she found, however, would take her into a very different kind of conflict zone. It started with an itch - first on her feet, then up her legs, like a thousand invisible mosquito bites. Then a trip to the doctor and, a few weeks shy of her 23rd birthday, a diagnosis: leukemia, with a 35 percent chance of survival.

A study in healing
Revisado: 04-29-23
I loved this book. For anyone navigating a journey through grief, her struggles and successes provide a roadmap for discovering things we can only see when viewing someone elses’ experiences. Learning of her relapse and second bone marrow transplant before starting this book, so much of her beginning story is hard to read. Her insights into healing by using love were a balm to my soul.

Unspeakable Grief Covered with Deep Love
Revisado: 10-27-22
I loved every single second of listening to the author’s beautiful voice, her musical phrasing and her magical connection to Sicily. I am overcome by her ability to describe the twin emotions of love and grief and recommend this book to all who might be searching for comfort after loss. And anyone else, actually.

Historia
Gadsby grew up as the youngest of five children in Tasmania, where homosexuality was illegal until 1997. After moving to mainland Australia and receiving a degree in art history, they found themselves adrift, working itinerant jobs and enduring years of isolation punctuated by homophobic and sexual violence. When Gadsby was twenty-seven, a friend encouraged them to enter a stand-up competition. They won, and so began their career in comedy.

Touching tribute by Hannah to herself
Revisado: 07-09-22
I loved this book but, then, I loved the Netflix special called Nanette so I figured to be a fan. Hannah’s writing is so good and for all her comments about her non-feeling, her insight is masterful. Some of her story is so hard to hear - cruelty always shocks me - but her message of resilience means that we are the better for her sharing it all with us. I highly recommend

Historia
Back when restaurant menus were still printed on paper, and wearing a mask—or not—was a decision made mostly on Halloween, David Sedaris spent his time doing normal things. As Happy-Go-Lucky opens, he is learning to shoot guns with his sister, visiting muddy flea markets in Serbia, buying gummy worms to feed to ants, and telling his nonagenarian father wheelchair jokes. But then the pandemic hits, and like so many others, he’s stuck in lockdown, unable to tour and read for audiences, the part of his work he loves most.

Sublime
Revisado: 06-17-22
David Sedaris speaks words directly from my own brain. I’m constantly in awe of how his idea of funny matches with my 72 year old white, straight, female idea of funny. His descriptions of his painful relationship with his father mirrors so many of my own memories if my narcissistic mother, even down to the poignant interactions with the diminished, elderly version that remained. I’m always so sorry to come to the end of his books!

I loved this book. I chose Audible rather than a hard copy once I realized RR himself would be narrating. He was all I hoped for - funny, poignant, interesting and heartbreaking. I can’t recommend this highly enough. He is a musical genius and, also, a great writer.

First of all, the narration was top rate. At times, the calmness of the speaker was the only way I could allow the horrific message inside my being.
These stories deserve to be told. We must take note.
