Historia
Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.

A pleasant surprise
Revisado: 02-17-20
I got this book expecting a comedy with some existential undertones, and I got that, but this book is so much more than that. Seriously, nothing would have prepared me for the emotional reaction I got, especially with the last chapter.
I don't want to spoil it for anyone, so trust me, this book is more than a funny criticism of generic sci-fi narrative, it's a compelling tale of what life is and what it means, who we are and if our lives are really ours, if we live by choice, chance or fate.
I got this book looking for a fun story, and it was, because I laugh and laugh, but it also made me cry. Because sometimes death can be pointless, but that doesn't mean our lives are, so we have to live them in a way that we are dying we can say "that was a good life".

Some good parts, but not good in the end
Revisado: 05-23-18
The narrator was more than okay for me, and some points of the story were interesting, but Mikey's relationship with the women left me feeling uncomfortable and disappointed. On one hand he showed real empathy with Angela and Audrey, how because of their powers they can't interact with other people in a normal way, but on the other it seemed like every women he met was attracted to him. And I get that you could easily get attached with someone that doesn't dies when you touch them, but even so the relationships were a bit rushed, especially at the end. I don't know, in some ways I liked it and it made me laugh, but a good solid story with proper characters and relationships development are necessary for me and this book was lacking in both fronts.

Just as the title says, both the story and the narrator failed to make me care or be interested in the characters and the plot.

Amazing all around
Revisado: 05-04-18
This is a beautiful story about love, friendship and happiness, mainly in the sense of what those things actually mean. Gemma is so obsessed with statistics and probability that she lives her life feeling miserable about not being like everybody else.
I think her love for Sarah was real, but sort of idealised, after all Sarah is straight and was in a happy relationship. I admit that at the beginning I was kinda hoping they would end up together, but after a couple of chapters I did a 180 and was now afraid they would, because it would ruin the story and it's potential message.
Fortunately that wasn't the case and Gemma found her happiness, because even after Sarah knew everything she was still her friend, so Gemma could leave her impossible dream behind and go on with her life. I really liked this story, a part of me would've liked to see more of Sarah and Mikey, but even so I still think the ending was perfect, a perfect 10/10.

Historia
Pop star Leontyne Blake might sing about love, but she stopped believing in it a long time ago. What women want is her image, not the real her. When her father has a stroke, she flees the spotlight and returns to her tiny Missouri hometown. In her childhood home, she meets small-town nurse Holly Drummond, who isn't impressed by Leo's fame at all. That isn't the only thing that makes Holly different from other women. She's also asexual. For her, dating is a minefield of expectations that she has decided to avoid.

So happy I just cried for two hours.
Revisado: 04-06-18
I'm gonna keep this short, because otherwise I don't know if I'll ever stop writing about how good this book is. This book spoke to my soul, I'm asexual so it was so amazing to read about a character like me. And like Holly, I don't hate sex but I find pleasure by pleasing my partners. I wish some day I find some one that gets me like Leo understood her.
I'm too emotional to go into specifics, so I can't tell you about all my favorite scenes. But I will talk about one thing I loved, because it's so rare, even in other queer books I've read. It's was when threre was still like 2 and half hours left and I was like "omg there going to be some unnecessary drama right?" But no, they TALKED, which sometimes it doesn't happen in other books and it's SOOO frustrating.
So it was a refreshing story in lots of ways. Both the author and the narrator did an AMAZING job bringing these characters to life. Each was unique and perfectly portrayed, they felt real, like people you might know, so their pain and joy also felt real, which made this whole experience extremely rewarding.
I CAN'T recommend this book enough, so buy it, be it printed, Kindle or audiobook format, it doesn't matter, although the audiobook has the added bonus of the narrator. I know I'm gonna be getting it in ALL formats, even if it's the last thing I do. So stop reading my rambling, do yourself a favor and dive into this story, you're not gonna regret it. I know I didn't, and never will.

A nice, easy and very pleasant story.
Revisado: 03-27-18
As another review said, this is a lovely story without needless drama. I mean, I love some drama, but it's nice to read a story that doesn't have evil exes, plotting villains or dumb secrets kept for dumb reasons.
It felt like a real story, that could happen to real people. They talk about their problems and doubts like mature and intelligent people. I hope Jea has other books, because I would most definitely like to have more of this.

No words of mine can do this book justice.
Revisado: 03-16-18
This book has been a true journey, through amazing imaginary lands and emotions I had never felt before. Tomi has built a world, so rich and vibrant, pulsing with life like few books have ever managed before. Following Zélie, Tsain and Amari I've laughed and cried along with them.
I've always been very empathic, sharing the pains and joys of others, so while I never felt anything of what Zélie suffered in my own flesh, I can feel it through her and her story. But it's only a shadow of it, I could NEVER feel it fully like her or the people that suffer in real life.
Like Tomi said at the end, this is a fantasy story, but the pain and the loss are real, sop please, don't leave what this book made you feel between it's pages. Take it with you wherever you, don't let the memory of Zulaika fade. We can change things, but only in we work together.
Thank you for writing this book, Tomi. It's not the story of my life or my people, but it has touched me deeply, further solidifying my resolve to do everything I can to help. I know I probably won't change much, but it's not about that or about me. It's about doing what's right, no matter what.
Anyways, as you can tell, I love this book. It and it's characters will always have a special place in my heart. It's magic goes beyond what the magi wielded and I can't wait for what's to come. The next books have an assured place in my library, as any other book by Tomi Adeyemi.

5 times in a row I've fallen in love
Revisado: 02-03-18
Jenny Frame has done it one more time, as has Nicola. This is a magnificent story and by far the kinkiest one. I loved every minute of it, as always the characters are amazingly written by Jenny and masterfully interpreted by Nicola.
I hope we see more of Axedale, especially Quaid who I've come to really like. As all her friends in Axedale, I want her to find someone that makes her happy. I know that if Jenny writes that story I won't be disappointed and she will deliver her usually simple but charming and sweet style that never fails to make me fall in love with her books.
