repetitive descriptions, boring pace, plot holes…
Revisado: 04-08-25
I made it through book 12 of this monstrosity, so I get to vent a bit. Obviously the series held my attention just enough to keep buying the next one. I struggle to give up on anything. But this was close.
No group of people ever have shrugged this many times in their life. Go ahead and estimate how many times you’ve shrugged (or the infamous one shoulder shrug) in your life. Multiply by 27.9. That’s the average per character/per book shrug count. If it’s not a shrug it’s a weary glare or a scowl.
The main characters are assholes. The dudes literally a terrorist. There’s nothing redeemable about him. He’s not even this GI Joe badass. He sucks as a human and I’m sad he didn’t die.
The only guy I liked was the friend that seemed to be an idiot. I can’t even remember his name.
SPOILER BELOW!!!!
Oh my god. I listened to what, 120? 150? hours of this nonsense and the villain is the little sister? She was like 20 when the apocalypse happened. She wasn’t this megascientist or solder of fortune. She was assaulted, wanted revenge, and ended the world? How exactly did that happen? After all of this we spend about a half hour on the epic showdown to explain and defeat her. She architects the worst disaster known to man and gains control as a queen of the apocalypse, yet she’s defeated by the worst thing ever - turning off the lights and yelling to put down their guns. I’ve actually seen this storyline before when the amusement park owner dressed up as a ghost, but Fred turned out the lights so shaggy could throw a net on him. Only to find out it was scrappy doo the whole f’ing time.
I wish they hadve all died. Then came back and eaten each other. Repeatedly. Actually if they make book 13 of this, I would buy it.

Worth the time & credit
Revisado: 01-13-25
Overall it was okay. At a price of books 1-3 for one credit, it is worth it. I struggle a bit to continue the series at a credit per book.
I give it a 4 star overall because of decent narration and a unique storyline with the bunkers. Behind that, there’s so many problems. Characters are completely flat. Any single member of the Mickey Mouse club could die a grisly death and I could care less. I’m not a writer, but I can say that whatever technique should make me bond with the characters was not utilized. No development. No growth. No emotion.
There’s no real conflict. Tons of opportunity for it, but it becomes a weak execution. “Oh these pirates are coming with automatic machine lasers to kill us all and wear our skin! What will we ever do? Wait. Oh it’s cool. The zombies ate them. “
The perspective changes constantly and without warning. One minute it’s first person from a-hole A. Then third person. Then first from d-head B.
Lastly I have to mention something that’s just a pet peeve. The majority of the world is dead. The undead are popping up everywhere from the dark attempting to bite you. No one is dropping an F-bomb? Seriously? It’s like listening to the edited version of a song. It’s less believable than zombies.
I might need to revisit my rating because I’m realizing how angry I am with these books. I’m actually rooting for the zombies (infected. Whatever. I don’t need a sermon). The only thing that might motivate me to get the next one is the hope that everyone dies and the remaining 97 books are the zombies seeking out their entire lineage to murder them as well.

Historia
On opening day of the new baseball season a small model-kit airplane flies down from the stands and buzzes the mound, where a decorated veteran pilot is about to throw out the first ball. The toy plane is the exact replica of the one flown by the war hero. Everyone laughs, thinking it's a prank or a publicity stunt. Until it explodes, killing dozens. Seconds later a swarm of killer drones descend upon the picnicked crowd, each one carrying a powerful bomb. All across the country artificial intelligence drive systems in cars, commuter trains and even fighter planes go out of control.

Phoned in a bit
Revisado: 10-31-24
Good book. Great narrator. If this were book 1 it would be great. At book 7, we need to see some character growth. More intense action scenes. 16 hours contained a LOT of filler.
I’m still going to book 8 without hesitation.

This story picks up exactly where book one left off. The Talbot family is evacuating their home amid a zombie apocalypse. Mankind is on the edge of extinction as a new dominant, mindless opponent scours in search of food, which happens to be non-infected humans. In this book are the journal entries of Michael Talbot, his wife, Tracy, and their kids, Nicole, Justin, and Travis. With them are Brendon, Nicole's fiancee, and Tommy, previously a Wal-Mart door greeter who may be more than he seems.

Kind of a misnomer
Revisado: 08-05-24
I really liked the first two books in this series. I skipped the minor release books and went straight to book 3 (as labeled on audible). I have to admit I glanced at the description, but didn’t think much on it. I should have. Some will read my review and say “obviously”, but for the one guy like me who doesn’t catch it, this is for you.
Essentially this is kind of like tales in the same universe, but all new characters. It is NOT a continuation from the first two books. There are no continuing character arcs or “but what about Des?” answers.
Also I feel like I missed something in one of the .5 release books as they referenced previous things I didn’t know. It sees at least one of the “aside" books should have a whole release number in the sequence.
That being said, this book has a whole different feel. Maybe it was the co-authoring or just going in another direction, but it was off. So many unanswered questions, plot holes, and useless filler not present in 1 or 2. Generally, this did not hold my attention as well.
I tried to rate based on a view of this single book and not in comparison to others before it. Overall, it's fine, but I don't exactly recommend it. Read 1 & 2 and just accept the fact you get no further information or wrap up.

Most killable cast
Revisado: 06-14-24
This is my second listen through to this series. It had been a few years, so I kind of forgot what a grind it was. I typically enjoy Bronsons narrations, but this was so awkward. Many of NSS’s works get a bit wordy, but I get over it because the stories are great. This just didn’t get it across that line.
I literally was rooting for the aliens the entire book. My complaint is they didnt kill off the entire cast. The only likable guy was the a-hole marine sergeant and he didn’t make it.
Overall, I still give it a 4 because it was a somewhat (okay, that’s generous) coherent story. I love a box set. And I made it to the end twice. 80 hrs for 1 credit is just a good value.

Decent story, great performance
Revisado: 05-15-24
Overall, I don’t regret my time invested in the listen, but I was also okay with it being over. He ended it at a good point.
I really had no expectations coming in. It’s the first international zompoc book I’ve listened to. Author did a good job translating the story from European to US. I mean that more in concepts than language. There were still parts I couldn’t relate to, for example, like everyone’s unfamiliarity with firearms. I totally get that Denmark isn’t the same as here - just stating it’s hard for me to imagine.
As many others have stated, the characters are often stupid. They constantly make the stereotypical horror movie mistakes. No one finds a weapon to carry with them.
I thought I was going to hate the plot (cause and solution to infection), but I actually ended up liking it a lot. Very different.
Nick has a LOT of potential and I think he will continue to grow as an author. I look forward to reading more of his catalog and future works.
Matt is absolutely amazing, as always. He continues to deliver with emotion and consistency. He always holds my attention. I hold him up with the other greats like Sean Runnett and RC Bray.
