Surprises and wows

Total
4 out of 5 stars

This is a study on teenage trauma and how it impacts you and all those around you. Jack is a retired firefighter who owns a crime scene cleaning business. We get a bit about that job - not much. What we get is called to a scene of a suicide and surprises happen. There is just enough crazy to keep things interesting and the cat Natasha Badinoff keeps the reader from falling into a despair cycle. So while I didn't sob uncontrollably, I did gasp and bite my knuckles a couple of times because I just knew someone would out Jack and it came at a cringeworthy time so I, of course, could not put this book down.

The audio book performance was ok.

Freaking awesome! I am a fan of Aiden Bates already so when I saw this one- Seals, alphas, MPREG- squee! This is a smart, action-packed romantic suspense story.

We meet these guys smack dab in the middle of an operation. That was so cool. I luv Mal! He and his sister are bada$$es. And holy moly is the audiobook performance the best ever? Seriously folks, Austin Jay is genius!

Claude is a successful vampire who does not actually like being a vampire. He was turned, not born, and retained a lot of his humanity. The Coven leader is suspicious of him because he lacks ties to the community.

Sven is an omega wolf who chafes at society’s expectations of omegas. He wants to take his time and find his fated mate, but his parents pressure him to date. Ironically, he dates a wolf approved by his parents while having hook ups with Claude. And he gets pregnant.

Claude and Sven get together and I thought that was the end of the story, but hold on there! Not so fast, sonny. There is more.

The second half of the story has kidnapping, betrayal, some angst and forgiveness? Claude has to make a choice and Sven argues for the path that leads to forgiveness. That was a bit too sweet for me because the shifter-vampire life seems like it would be more brutal. Like the first book. I was hoping to see some familiar friends and a little crossover, but that did not happen.

JJ Jenness does another good job of telling the story. I found Sven could sound annoying at times, but he is young so that is expected. I liked the voice he gave Claude. It fit and really brought him to life.

The performance is top notch and makes me crave more! But seriously, I have so many questions. Now that Declan embraces his bisexuality and commits to Sam, I'm disappointed in Sam's lack of planning. Uhm, you confess that you are a spy and can bring Declan into the spyworld, but you don't think he needs some protection? Until it is too late? Sam is such a crappy boyfriend. And my questions are about Declan. I won't ask for them here because spoiler alert! Just so know, the ending is a cliff hanger of sorts and Declan has a suspicious history. I'm hooked and off to read the next in the series.

I think this story works well as an audiobook because it covers a lot of ground and angst without making you work too hard for it.

Pete and Liam are likable and both have alarming issues that work to move the plot and relationship along. We don’t get a lot of details on the why’s- that is left out. Instead, we get all of the plot lines neatly tied up and resolved by the end. Which is perfect when listening to the story while working or cooking or driving, etc.

The audiobook performance is flawless. Brian Meslar switches accents fluidly and brings the characters to life.

Is it possible to have an insta-crush on a place? When I started this book, the town felt familiar and after a few chapters I knew why. Although it can be read as a standalone, you will appreciate it more if you read the author's short story, Joy, first.

Welcome to the town of Lancaster, New Hampshire where the weather is cold, the apple cider is hot and the local matchmaker is a burly dude behind the counter of Eatery, the local restaurant.

I enjoyed reading this story about two adults who know who they are and what they want from life and a partner. Although Bowen looks and often acts like a twink, he really isn't. His embarrassing moments are charming and relatable - he literally bumps into Felix his future love interest at the holiday fair and makes both a splash and an impression. Bowen's best friend is great in that I know where all the bodies are buried so I can snark and give you all the unsolicited advice I want kinda way. Their discussions are cringe-worthy and hilarious just like best friend talks should be.

Watching Felix and Bowen build a relationship while sneaking kisses in a movie theater was really adorable and supports the small town feeling. I'm delighted to see more of the town fleshed out and meet more of the residents. There are a couple of negative events that gave me heart palpitations because I just KNEW they would happen as necessary evils to move the romance along. Fortunately, I didn't need smelling salts or an intervention because I also knew the author wouldn't let the events get too far out of hand. She even managed to resolve conflict from her short, Joy. I did a double fist pump and a woot- woot over that part.

And really, if you haven’t heard Greg, you are missing out. He captured the snark and the drama and boy oh boy he is amazing! The audiobook will be on your comfort listen list. I promise!!.

Soul searching YA story

Everyone wants Mike. His friend, Rachel still wants him. His benefactor, Paul wants to marry him. Even his teammate, Hank, wants to fool around with him.

I found it a little difficult to like Mike. He has some moments where he thinks about his life choices and he is pretty brutal in his assesments. I think he is dissasociating from life because his mom is sick. At least, this is the only palatable reason I can come up with to explain him.

Honestly, I can see where the author was going with this story. Life is hard and full of hard choices that pull at us from all directions - especially when young and your entire life is ahead of you. I remember having this style of self reflection in college when I didn't realize how rude and selfish I could sound. There are so many things flowing through this book, many of the topics are lightly explored.

I think Hank deserves his own book. He is a strong secondary character and he has an interesting story to tell. He just needs more time to tell it.

The audio book performance is very good. Alex has a gentle, smooth voice that was comforting and he portrays the characters with empathy. He's so skil!ful that I will definitely listen to more of his work.

Overall, I think college age people will relate to this book.

I simply love this series. Finally, Holland gets his story. I really appreciate the snippets of pack life and the political background as we get more information on what true omegas are. It's also cool that this series is written in connecting books. It will make most sense if you read the installment in order.

Nick J Russo does a fantastic job of bringing these characters to life. I think he totally nails Holland's accent and personality. Really outstanding performance!

This is a fascinating take on shifter mpreg. Jason is a special type of Omega and is on the run. His abusive Alpha wants to claim him and will do anything to get him back. Jason's plan to thwart his Alpha's claim is a good one, but dangerous as well.

The world building is pretty solid - think of the Trail of Tears in the 1830's- where Shifters are forced into internment camps called enclaves. We get to see inside the Mercy Hills enclave and meet the main family. So you would think this might be a dry story, huh? Nope. There is drama and steamy hot sexy scenes galore! And the audio performance is fantastic.

Nick Russo juggles the myriad of voices really well. He gives great emotions and narration in just the right way. I look forward to listening to book 2.

This is one of my fave storylines of all time. Ollie is a beautiful soul and is trying so hard to grow up. He is a man who likes to feel pretty so he wears what he likes which is generally women’s clothing. The topic of gender identity permeates the story and is handled gently and respectfully. I seriously love this side of m/m romances.

So Ollie is a model and business owner and grieving his brother’s death. A childhood friend pops up with a serious problem and Ollie volunteers his help. The mystery is a little bit easy to figure out but so darn interesting. I was kinda mad that the ending is a cliffhanger. Because really? I was all ready for a HEA. The HFN is okay and I was glad that I found this series after the first three books were written so I could binge read them.

I recently got into audiobooks and kept this series on my wish list. Wow, just wow. Mike Pohlable captures Ollie’s voice beautifully. His performance is wonderful and really brings the story to life. I got chills and will keep this one on my re-listen rotation.
